A very interesting thread, but why is this on the Leeds United FC board and not on the General Chat board ?

it is not called Road Tax anymore exactly for that reason So people don't think that money should be spent on the roads!

I think our Motorway network is the best in the world, once people learn how to overtake and pull straight back in

They need to get the ****ing lorries off the road and start using boats & rivers again! If the trains wasn't so ****, use them too! Its a stupid idea, will the speed limit for commercial vans go up too, also HGV's who carry heavier loads than when the 70mph was introduced?

I know you are mate, but unless you've driven on every motorway network in the world(which I haven't btw, maybe you have) then it's a bit of a sweeping statement to say ours is the best.
All I can go by are the motorways I've driven on in Europe & America are better than ours IMO.

The highways in America are superb, massive lanes and good maximum speed levels. The freeways in Australia are much better than anything in the UK, they have lanes that are actually big enough for the standard car and more.
The UK motorways are pish poor, with the size of each lane totally wrong, due to the structure being for small cars, motorway lanes need to much bigger in the UK.

Actually I was just googling it, according to statistics (although they were from 2003 - I didn't put THAT much effort in), despite having some of the busiest motorways in the world, we have one of the lowest accident rates. This says so.

Australia has a lot more space to shove motorways but the collision rate per person on the road is higher!

The junctions in america aren't set up well enough the exits/entries are too sharp!

Very true one of the safest in the world! It would be even safer if we introduced compulsory motorway training so dickheads learn to use the bloody things how they are meant to be used

Not my experience and I spent three years in Western Australia, travelling to Margaret River and Freemantle on many occassions. The biggest issue was animals crossing the freeways, hence some cars had 'rhu bars' on the front. I also worked in Florida and New York State and I have to say, I felt safer on the American highways than I did in any other road in the world. I liked (once I got used to it) the fact there is no lane rules and I can't say I ever had any problem with exits or entries, you follow the signs and exit or join, just like it says.

The problem is you can't go on a motorway until you have a driving license, so they'd have to reorganise the licensing system. Make it so the current full license is limited, only allowing motorway travel with an instructor. Pass Plus should then be made mandatory.
