She makes some good points ... There should be more routes to work available by offering actual on the job training (and not just manual labour jobs).

Train and work in electrical engineering,. Project management , plastering , finance , housebuilding , resourcing etc

My niece is doing her 'dev' degree through an employer ...part time study , part time working ....she will be better placed than most at uni when she gets qualified to move on to a well paid job ...education and experience.

I worked as a PM for recruitment company as so many deluded students walking in the door asking for 30k plus without experience.

I have a degree was the cry ... You have no experience and entry level is xk !

Get a trade, piss easy apart from working on building sites in winter. Good pay and if you have the balls to go it alone, you can earn a decent wedge.

I left school with one standard grade of note and probably earn more than most with a £17.6k pay packet.

Obviously no where near Grove or Archer but not bad for a lad from privileged twechar.

Having had the opportunity to watch family members with very similar life experience and schooling up to age 16, that then choose different paths, I totally agree with you.

Some took on the job vocational training, and have since changed vocations totally, and gained the additional qualifications needed while working, others drifted to University, and took subjects with a very limited application in the real world. The students lack the life experience and understanding that the others have gained, and even though they're the same ages, they are less mature.

Those that didn't go to Uni, have houses, good holidays and are on top of their finances. The students are in big debt, living off the parents, and with few transferable skills or experience, never mind qualifications that would interest an employer. They'll need additional training for any meaningful employment.

Having said that, I know several people that took very demanding degrees (some vocational) , and they are well ahead of both groups.

There's nothing wrong with good degrees. It's bad degrees that are useless.

I don't know if it still holds true, but it used to be the case that the majority of those that built up businesses to become ultra rich, don't have degrees.

I'm all in favour of education, but for me, it needs to have a practical purpose, and a lot of those that have qualifications, struggle to produce a coherent argument, because too many don't get taught critical thinking skills.

They seek out an 'expert' view that suits their own position, ignoring ones that don't, and then claim to be basing their opinion on the 'facts'.

'Skepticism' is a healthy and recognised scientific position, and is at the fore of a lot of scientific discoveries, yet it's now used as a pejorative term.

I went to a Grammar School and afterwards it was easy to get jobs because there was discipline at the school and they made you think. The employers didnt expect us to know very much but they knew we'd be able to do the jobs after we were shown how to do them. Nowadays a lot of employers complain that recent graduates spend too much time looking at their mobile phone when they should be working.

A lot of lecturers are critical of the standards of many of the students they receive and are expected to educate.

Just to add to that, I don't think it's a recent phenomenon, those educated in the 1950's would most likely beat most of us at English grammar and arithmetic.

So there are no reports of terrorist attacks? Stabbings? Boats? And lots of anti-English articles?

Shall we play a game? If you find any anti-English articles you get 50 points, if I find an article that refers to any of the topics I suggested I get 1 point. All mainstream news sites.

I watched "The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies" and a young policeman asked Christopher Jefferies to read the statement he'd made before signing it. He asked if he could correct the spelling mistakes!

So if you win: lots of foreigners are doing bad stuff, if I win: the media ignores foreigners doing bad stuff and has a go at white British? Umm, if you like.

No, I was just proving you wrong, that's all.

Do you think the UK media should be more anti-foreigner?

You are entirely right, we need to send Muslims to re-education camps to teach them that rape is not acceptable, and black teenagers all need to go to knife crime prevention workshops.

    I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem.
