Likely the same reason Rob Green spent a couple of seasons at Chelsea or Scott Carson spent last season at The Sheikh Mansour Team: an experienced third-choice GK who won't affect the HG numbers
Because he’s 33, had a really iffy time since Pep decided he didn’t like him at City, and likely wants a final chance to prove himself at the top end of the PL. I doubt Hugo is going anywhere and if he was I’d want us to be looking for someone who was far less of a gamble as first choice than Hart.
To be honest we do need to be looking for Hugo's successor in the next year or so ...I'm going to develop a noticeable nervous tic when I read Andre Onanna's name, aren't I?
It was mate but that is not the be all and end all of being a good team influence. He was one of 4 that were causing a lot of rifts in the squad and we are better off without him.
Yeah his contract runs out when he’s 35 in 2 years time. I don’t see him being sold or getting an extension in that time. Three options 1) Gazza steps it up massively and displaces him, 2) Austin or Whiteman go on loan and turn out to be world class 3) we buy someone in the next couple of years.
Romano did actually say we’re considering opening talks with Hugo to extend his deal. Since the turn of the year when he came back from injury he’s looked as good as he’s been for years, arguably back to his best and I really hope that continues. Austin Spurs number one by 2023 though. Calling it now. That’s my long term bet. About time we produced a keeper for the first team and I think he might be the one.
You could be right. I just can’t see Hugo as first choice past the age of 35. Maybe he’s got that longevity in him, I don’t know.
Yeah I honestly don’t know either, could go either way I guess. His form in 2020 has given me some hope he may have got a second wind, because for the previous 2 or so years he was doing too many unforced errors despite still pulling off wonder saves. Don’t think he’s made a single mistake this year so far, at least I can’t think of one anyway. May have given Friedel a call or something for advice, that guy was a freak of nature.
He came out of lock down looking more confident and more determined than ever before and for the first time IMO looked in command of his area
Maybe the effect of different coaching, Sheff Utd game apart we were more compact and difficult to break down, and whilst I agree that he looked more confident, and was making good saves where required, he wasn't left exposed anywhere near as often as had been the case for about a year before lock down.
