Thank you both. No news yet. Covid protocols mean that I cannot visit, although the nurse I spoke to said she would ask the doctor later if that could be waived. I am hoping that once she has had her scans she will be fit enough to be released into my care.
So, our figures now revised - puts us slightly better than Spain and slightly worse that Italy and Sweden (who knows if their count is true) on death per 1m population. USA figures are rapidly going up, and likely to pass our death/populations figures in 2 or 3 weeks. Maybe we just cant compare anything just yet, and hopefully treatments will become more available and effective before winter, to further slow the spread. Edit - even more strange for me - Spain has barely recorded any death since early May. Now I know I may be cynical, but it is no coincidence this happened in time for people to start booking summer holidays. if you see their line over the past 2-3 months, I don't believe it for a second. They maintain only c. 500 deaths since June 1st...

yes, it was under threat of big issues at that factory last week. I think the town may end up in localised lockdown. I think I’m far enough out in the villages to not be affected.
Thank you. I did get a call to visit my wife and it was an afternoon of two halves. Initially my wife was tired, capable of chatting but in need of sleep. First half. Wifey was administered with an anti sickness drug. The next 2 hours was watching nurses, senior nurse, junior doctor and finally senior doctor/trainee consultant (of a variety of races, god bless them all) trying to get my wife to respond to verbal commands and physical contact. The first thought was a stroke. The second was an adverse reaction to the anti sickness drug, which is what it turned out to be. The second half The senior doctor, Dr Ken, took a more direct approach to getting a response from my wife, by inflicting pain, by pressing down on her chest. That got a “Get off” response. She then followed his instructions to move arms and legs etc. This was followed by questions Where are you? Hospital. What year is it? 2020. What is the name of the Prime Minister? Tosser. I kid you not. I thought then, she’s back in the room. She has had a CT scan and was on her way for an MRI scan when I left. Hopefully she will be fit enough to be released tomorrow. And, being political, give the nurses a fecking big payrise, Johnson.

I'm not sure what makes that unthinkable. Spain had a very long, and very strict lockdown, and Germany's deaths since mid-May are pretty minuscule, too. Same with Italy since the end of June, when their first wave effectively ended. So it could be that it's a massive conspiracy to make their numbers look good, or it could be that -- among large European nations -- the UK was just uniquely really **** about handling this. I know where I'd place my money. It really wasn't impossible to get on top of this with proper testing and societal compliance with hygiene. And Q2 economic data is out for most of Scandinavia...Sweden's strategy not only involved 10x as many deaths as its compatriots, their economy also fared worse: https://www.businessinsider.co.za/c...falls-8pc-in-q2-worse-nordic-neighbors-2020-8 This is mostly because, as with the UK, the failure to be stringent enough early means that they had too much of the virus present to really open up through the summer, and consequently the economy didn't bounce back to the extent that their neighbours -- with trivial infection rates -- did.
And this is basically what ive been trying to say for ages - no one knows and it is too early to say. It makes me laugh how much people on here have gone on at the Gov (and I keep saying im not political and literally have no persuasion to either party) but everyone saying we are worse than Spain and France etc haven't said much since our figures were revised down. Now I am not pro Gov at all, but it isn't right to vehemently attack, often personally about certain people in the Gov, then when the figures are revised down, say nothing... I accept we had opportunities to lock down sooner, but that also then makes healthcare unavailable to people who need it, and that also killed people. Like I said previously, I don't think we can sit here and judge anything right now, but that has been the modus operandi for many. Sometimes we need to take a step back and see how things play out, then complain when full facts are known. So taking step back is what I'm about to do, I'll revisit the Covid thread towards the end of next week
Wait, the architect of Sweden's plan thinks it was a good plan? Stop the presses! Tegnell has, to date, been wrong on every single count. He claimed that Sweden would achieve herd immunity by early June; that was untrue. He claimed that Sweden's neighbours would suffer longer and in larger numbers over time; that was untrue. He claimed that Sweden would be able to open more fully because of its approach; that was untrue. But rare is the person who is going to come out and say "my idea was a bad one and several thousand people are dead as a result".
