Most refugees to Europe arrive in Greece or Italy. Neither of those two countries can cope with the influx, so rely on other countries in Europe to share the burden. The ones they have have been vetted and deemed in need. The vast majority of the refugees trying to cross the channel are male, of fighting age and have very little reason to risk leaving mainland Europe to be an illegal immigrant on an island. There is nothing for them here that they can't get in France or half a dozen other European countries.
