The state of play regarding every Bristol City player's contract, expiration date and extensions
With several players now out of contract, we've taken a look at how long every other player has left on their current deal

Bristol City are in limbo, with no big decisions being made until a new man is appointed at the helm.

Korey Smith, Ashley Williams and Niki Maenpaa are currently waiting to find out whether their futures lie at Ashton Gate next season and the Robins have a whole host of players with just one year remaining on their current deal.

Whoever the new manager is, he'll have a lot to pack in before the start of the Championship season on September 12, with contracts, transfers and more to decide on.

Smith didn't play a part in the final game of the season against Preston, although Bristol Live understands that the midfielder asked to be left out to avoid the risk of injury and may have played his final game for the club.

The futures of Famara Diedhiou and Niclas Eliasson also rely on contract decisions, with both linked elsewhere and will likely be sold if they don't commit to new deals.

The Robins will be desperate to tie down their young talent to a host of free departures next season, with the likes of Liam Walsh, Taylor Moore and Max O'Leary all having just one year left on their current contracts (although O'Leary has a one year extension option).

The club have been shrewd with the extension options and hold clauses in several player's contracts, but will still be keen to tie several down as they look to push to the Premier League once more.

In what is sure to be a summer of limited spending due to the affect of the coronavirus, Bristol City will likely have to rely on their young players this season to make the push up the table.

Incomings will depend on outgoings, and the Robins will have to raise funds before bringing in new players - and those new additions will likely be minimal, unless City explore the free agent and loan market.

As the decisions over the out of contract players remain unanswered, we rounded up the remaining years on each Bristol City player's contract and the extension options in each contract, with the help of City fan Dave Featherstone (@davefevs on Twitter).

I sometimes find it very difficult to comprehend the attitude of people when all along the main driving force for a lot of the actions at BCFC is driven by Ashton [ and a couple of his appointee's ]
THEY ARE SO SO BITTER of LJ and in need of just having to publish something or just try and have the last word [ often parrot like repetitions ] they do as many people do, concentrate almost entirely on negativity and have to apportion the blame on someone when the reality is they [ victim ] may only have a minor part to play in that action. They [ accuser ] cannot live with positivity and deny the negativity they sublimely exude …. LJ DID A VERY GOOD JOB, and you can see by the input [output?] of a great many anti LJ 'ers just why he had difficulties ...HE WAS THE ONLY ONE DOING ANYTHING DURING THE 4and a half years of dragging city from not being on the ladder to pretty close to the top …… ALL ON HIS OWN ….WOW … no wonder

Just one thing for all of us to remember whether we are hero worshipers of the cult of LJ or long term non believers, he was sacked by the Sl and the board of Bristol City FC for failure, he failed in his task, he missed the targets set by his bosses, he could not achieve the ambitions of the clubs owner despite the total financial investment, faith and belief shown in him.

He got the boot and we all know the reasons why, water under the bridge, time for a new vision, fresh modern ideas and proven experience, I look forward to our future with ambition and real progress not false illusion.

To be fair though Wiz , you are right he failed this season to reach the target set , so rightly got sacked , however he did succeed in previous seasons and has left with City significantly improved from when he took over, so you could reasonably make the argument that his overall tenure was successful.

By the way I don’t consider myself neither a hero worshiper , nor a long term non believer in LJ, just a fan who wants every City manager to be successful because ultimately that would mean City are successful.

I just hope that this statement becomes reality and not false expectations like it's lead us in the past.....and I honestly hope we progress on, from the decent place LJ left behind..
Which ever way it's written and however much people disliked him (for whatever reason) and for however much was spent (you can spend zillions and still get relegated), it shouldn't be forgotten, that whatever manager comes in, needs to improve on what LJ's left behind, otherwise SL & co and the haters should also deem it as failure, which is why LJ was booted...

That strikes the right chords with me Ashton, I feel the same way, we are all fans of Bristol City FC, we all want our club to be successful, many times during LJ's reign I congratulated him, the team and there was some good times but the reality is he eventually failed and has gone, he is not a benchmark for players or his successor to follow.

We must now all move on together and support the new regime, LJ ,not deliberately became a very devicive figure and caused massive splits in our support base, I want us all to gel together again in a common cause, Bristol City FC.

It pains me to see that list of players with contracts expiring in 2021. There's just so much potential talent there, and you can bet half of it will go to waste.

that IS NOT LJ's fault it is the fault of the board especially MA who controls the purse strings... he constantly sold out from under LJ's JB in January was the last straw … MA SORTS THE FINANCES AND CONTRACTS … NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW HOW CLOSE THE MONEY DIFFERENCE WAS between player and renewed contract .. City could finish up in far worse position now LJ has gone … they [the board ] had a plan, a solid plan and they have almost blown it

Yeah I see what you mean from that point of view, re; the contracts, but some of the players are provided to LJ and he is expected to make use of them, and he just hasn't.

There are players there who could have progressed so much more, but just haven't. I'd love to have seen more of Walsh and Moore, and that's down to LJ, not Ashton. We've all forgotten how decent Max O'Leary was during his brief run in the team. Eliasson could get the golden boot and still wouldn't have got a start from Johnson. And Hakeeb Adelakun. Does he really exist or is he just a made up player? I'm not really sure myself! <laugh>

Much as I detest Johnson it's unfair to blame him for contracts and their longevity.
Ashton gets the plaudits for the transfer values of Reid, Bryan, Flint, Kelly etc etc. Equally, he should be held account for the current squad contracts.

In fairness, the ones whose contracts are up end of next season would not of been dealt with until now anyway.

true, very true to a degree but as I have advocated many times you need to have a plan ...stick to the plan ..and service the plan MA and co haven't ...if a player is young and doing fairly well then he should always be on a minimum of 2 years left possibly 3 … they are the basis of the team that will have gelled through playing together ...even all the neggies have to agree to gelling!...
the contract can be that the player has a semi release clause … say based on £5m +plus the amount of contract payment due to him as opposed to a release of £5m full stop. The former can be [ +plus bit ] can be worded as a negotiable amount … MA et al have not done anything like it … let the contracts run out/down then find they are in the mire … like NOW

Wiz like you said its time to move on from LJ so stop digging up every little bit you can find to put the man down, he didn't succeed in what Lansdown brought him to the club for, l hope the next man in will be told before he signs a contract that every season we sell our best assets l wonder what coach we will end up with.
