Not referring specifically to boxing. More to Comm's point about it being a nationwide thing. It is. But it doesn't matter whether it's Essex, Scouse, Welsh or Geordie, people with regional accents aren't supposed to succeed.
This is probably right, but for whatever reason people with regional accents seem to get more stick when they make it big. They get sneered at by the old money, who judge ‘nouveau riche’ as being anyone who didn’t inherit their ****ing furniture. Then they get some working class folk giving them the bird as they’re jealous of their success.
Think Dagenham and Barking mate, then think BNP. Not sure they might have cleaned their act up now, but it used to be the foothold for many a racist.
I used to have a mate from Dagenham. Proper lary ****. He used to be telling people that he fought in 'Nam That was quite funny for a ****ing meathead tbh
It used to give me nightmares just the thought of crossing the water into Essex. Whose ever idea it was to put Lakeside there, needs shooting.
it was great for a weekend away with the lads....weekend on the piss, in southend, well it was great at the time.
Last time I went to Southend must have been over 30 years ago, that's how much I keep away from the place - not even sure if it still has it's 'famous' pier? To me it's just like travelling to the end of the earth. What with Tilbury docks, it's not exactly a place for a leisurely drive as the continuos lorries thunder pass. While Dagenham and Barking used to be home for all your right wing mobs. You seriously couldn't pay me to live there mate. I just see it as a wasteland, that you just look straight ahead on the M25, and don't even think about coming off until you've cleared the war zone.
Can’t say I’ve ever spent any real time in Essex, but I’ve had the misfortune of being lumbered with a decent number of Essex folk in various different contexts, and the ones I’ve met did little to dispel the stereotypes. You can always hear them before they appear it seems.
