Bristol City's next manager: Why Chris Hughton remains in the running at Ashton Gate By James PiercySports Editor 15:32, 29 JUL 2020 Updated15:37, 29 JUL 2020 The former Brighton & Hove Albion boss is on the shortlist and there has been no change to his situation As you may have realised by now there is something of the soap opera about Bristol City's pursuit of a new manager, in which there have been numerous plot twists and character progressions. The latest development arrived on Wednesday afternoon with a report in the Telegraph that Chris Hughton will not be taking over as City manager after an agreement was unable to be reached with the 61-year-old. The fury that manifested on social media within a few minutes of that story dropping was severe, given how popular the concept of the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager taking over at Ashton Gate has become over the last three-and-a-half weeks. Ever since Lee Johnson left BS3 on July 4, Hughton has been the overwhelming choice of the fanbase and remains so due to his promotion-winning credentials and reputation. As first reported by Bristol Live, Hughton undertook an interview with the club late last week and remains on the club's shortlist, with Wigan Athletic's Paul Cook the only other known candidate. However, Bristol Live understands that a decision is still to be made on identifying Johnson's successor and the concept that Hughton is out of the race simply isn't accurate. So too the idea that an agreement has "failed to be reached", because having met with the club, there has been no subsequent contact between the relevant parties due to the necessary process of speaking to other candidates. It may well still come to pass that he doesn't get the job, that judgement will be made internally, and multiple sources have indicated the process is still ongoing and Hughton remains very much in the running. There is, of course, a certain amount of brinksmanship involved in these situations which, in City's case, is developing into a saga due to the extensive timeframe since Johnson's dismissal. City are not the only club in need of a new manager with vacancies at fellow Championship clubs Birmingham City and Watford, with others potentially on the horizon depending on decisions that need to be made in the coming days. A phoney war takes place of claim and counter-claim in order to pressure clubs into making decisions but City, to their credit, remain focused on their principles of patience. Hughton will undoubtedly have suitors elsewhere, his CV and experience speaks for itself, and he does harbour an interest in the Watford job; which makes perfect sense, and it would be strange if he didn't. But he, like Cook and the other candidates involved must simply wait for a decision, like any other interview process in any other profession. Which, admittedly, doesn't make for a thrilling plot line. https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/bristol-citys-next-manager-chris-4376136
He had his interview and now has got to sit on his arse and wait to be summoned or advised, no follow up or contact for over a week, strange if that is true. 'So too the idea that an agreement has "failed to be reached", because having met with the club, there has been no subsequent contact between the relevant parties due to the necessary process of speaking to other candidates.'

It's turning into a fiasco, make a guy like Hughton wait so Holden can have an interview, if I was CH I would stick my fingers up and walk away.
Like I said before if he doesn't like the way we do things then he can walk away. No reason why Holden shouldn't have an interview
Would you be happy if Steve Lansdown chooses Holden to advance Bristol City's progressive future beyond LJ's 4 and a half year ambitions with Holden as his number 2 that failed?
Doesn't really matter what I think though does it? Would be a bit shoddy not to give Holden an interview after he stepped in
Good to know your thoughts, it all depends on the ambitions of our owner and MA, if they are happy with the qualities he has to offer then we all know which direction we will be heading.
I’m starting to think it’s someone that none of us have heard of yet. Someone we are negotiating with to get released or something like that. Could well be Paul Cook as Wigan are classing him as an asset so can claim monies. I’m secretly hoping it is Slavisa Jokanovic but he is in Qatar and on a lot of money and will cost a fortune so I may as well be hoping for Poch

Hands up who is surprised. Pathetic, and if he gets the job then it proves we have even less ambition than I already thought, and that wasn't a lot to start with !
If Holden is hired as our new manager then it will be the final chapter in my Bristol City support. Time after time we seem to shoot ourselves in the foot and it's starting to hurt quite a bit and when it comes down to the club's ambition I'm starting to think why bother?
Hang on Guys. Let's start worrying/being happy when the new man is appointed. Surely it can't be that Lansdown and Ashton decided to sack LJ after just the Cardiff game. They must have been looking pre lock down during LJ's latest losing run. That's 4 months to check out candidates. I reckon/HOPE we might all be surprised with the new manager. Ps If Holden's appointed then we'll all know the ambition and competance levels of the Board at BCFC.
