Care homes were 'thrown to the wolves' during COVID-19 outbreak, say MPs

Slow, inconsistent, sometimes reckless and even negligent.

That's the damning assessment of the government's approach to social care during the COVID-19 crisis, published today by the House of Commons' own spending watchdog, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

Meg Hillier MP, chair of the committee, said: "The deaths of people in care homes devastated many, many families."

The report says the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) decision to discharge 25,000 hospital patients into care homes without ensuring they'd been tested for the virus was an example of the government's "slow, inconsistent and at times negligent" approach to social care.

The committee also described the move as being an "appalling error".

The report is from the Public Accounts Committee which is made up of cross-party MPs.

It won't offer her more protection than actually testing all those coming in from affected areas as an alternative .. simple as that ... those same individuals being asked to self police is complete bollocks ... and Cummings is there as a stark reminder of how effective that is.

So you agree we’re not being “mugged off” then?
We haven’t got effective testing so that’s not an option. The best you can hope for is for people to do the right thing. The public outcry over Cummings gives hope that most will do the right thing.

No we are continually being mugged off ... they have been touting world class testing capacity and track & trace capabilities for weeks now ... and yet the most effective strategy they can come up with to deal with spikes in 2 Spanish regions is to hope that Joe Public will undertake 14 day self isolation when coming back from anywhere in Spain ... brilliant <doh>

It's as described - negligent and appalling.

I knew people being sent back to care homes without testing was in the thousands but 25000. How anyone can not understand the gravity of that number and its impact on tens of thousands more is beyond me.

Unless track and trace handcuffs you to the radiator as soon as you enter your details, it still relies on joe public doing the right thing.<doh>

Which again proves the point ... a shambolic, ill thought out concept to try and put a positive spin on our abject failure to lockdown quickly enough, ramp up testing capacity quickly enough and actually undertake those tests, particularly in relation to care homes and care home staff... that is why we have the highest death total in Europe ... not because of travellers coming back from the Canaries or Balearics or anywhere else ...

Most people probably do try and do the right thing, don’t they? But only if they know what it is...

I've been reading the comments for a while, all I'm seeing is people that don't like the Tories, so it wouldn't matter if they did do the right thing, they'd still find reason for it to be the wrong thing, or remind us again of the care home failings as if it's become some wininng knock out punch to any debate. A debate that was supposed to be about the Balearics.

Can you imagine Magaluf once it gets up and running again, places like Magaluf are a fooking shhitehole and is the party Island of Ibiza much better. You just know any social distancing will be zero, and although there might not be many cases now, our youngsters without doubt will certainly be brewing a problem for the Autumn.

Do I think it's unfair, yes, do I care, no.

Yeh the care homes news today is all about Tory bashing. Fcking hell the paranoia on here is getting worse by the day. Write off any current news report by saying it's anti-tory just because it offends.

Why you bitching so much bro, why are you so bothered about the Balearics, was you thinking of going to the party islands to spread your sperm and give us your pissed up pink wino updates, on your nightly bedding powers at the ripe old age of 60?

The main discussion was about the Balearics, but you just threw care homes in because it helped your argument, which has fook all to do with air bridges.

So because we got it wrong once, you want us to get it wrong again. Me, I would rather we went a couple of extra steps to avoid the same mistakes. Not sure how you equate a decisive decision as abject failure in this case?
Whilst having an effective track and trace system in place would be bloody brilliant, it is rather trying to close the stable door after the horse has bolted.
