Why the search for Bristol City's next head coach is taking so long and fans should keep faith
No announcement is imminent as Robins take their time to get the right man

Chris Hughton was in Bristol on Friday to have his interview with Bristol City but the former Brighton & Hove Albion boss is not the only contender to become the next Robins head coach.

As reported this week, Hughton is in talks with the club but there are other candidates (one of whom is based overseas while Robbie Fowler is believed to be another, and Dean Holden could well be interviewed too given his fine job in the last weeks of the season too).

City supporters are impatient to see the new man come into BS3. Especially with so much to decide upon and so little time to do it. Many calls need to be made on the future of the playing squad and future recruitment.

Bristol City pre-season training starts in two and a half weeks, and there is little room for manoeuvre regarding the future of several players now out of contract and free to discuss their options elsewhere.

The club, for their part, are determined to take their time on this appointment.

The board knows it is a vital hiring as the club aims to make a step towards the top six in season 2020/21.

Part of this is due to the vision of the Lansdown family. Bristol Live has been told that the Lansdowns are very honourable in their business dealings - perhaps they could even be regarded as a little old fashioned, in the best sense of that term.

Not for them are the incendiary tweets of Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani or Peterborough United's Darragh MacAnthony, even when they have been targeted by the Leeds supremo previously.

"Bristol City were impeccable with how they dealt with Reid and Marlon Pack. Lee Johnson and Steve Lansdown were spot on," explained Neil Warnock last summer.

Similarly, one EFL club owner we spoke to highly praised the work of Bristol City last summer in buying a player from the Robins, and the conduct of all those involved including the owners. While City have in the past even called other clubs to refute media stories linking the club to their staff and assure them that all approaches are done correctly and in line with league protocols.

Bristol City do things the right way and with class.

And that is part of the hold-up. The club has been determined to make this the most thorough recruitment process it can, including waiting until the end of the season to speak to candidates already in jobs and who have now finished their campaigns.

CEO Mark Ashton is now speaking to the shortlisted candidates with their interest confirmed.

"So what we will do right now is we will pull together that list - we have had conversations with the owners about the type of individual we're looking for, and from that list we will start to interview and we will move through an interview process and find the right person for this job," explained Ashton earlier this month.

But as the likes of Huddersfield change head coach within a matter of days the Robins are more studious.

It took until deadline day of the summer 2019 transfer window and the final minutes to secure Benik Afobe's signature, while Filip Benkovic and Markus Henriksen arrived late in the January window, announced in the final hours.

While the next head coach won't take that long to be decided upon, those signings do show that with a little patience the club can get their man.

Hughton was interviewed last Friday, we have to wait till this week for Fowler, Holden and others to have their go, we have to do things the right way with a bit of class, it might be considered old fashioned but it's the Lansdown way, MA is now down to the shortlist and the Robins are more studious.

That explains it then, it should fill Chris Hughton full of confidence.

If he doesn't like the way we do things then he can do one as far as I'm concerned

Hopefully we have a process in place that means we do not make knee jerk appointments anymore, which can only be a good thing.

The way i see it is as a whole our opinion or thoughts really dont matter a jot.
The people that are in power will do what they have been told to do by there paymaster.
He will get what he wants because its his money and his plaything.
I actually like the fella and believe that he loves city and would love to see them succeed for two reasons.and
the overriding one being his love of the team and after, the benefits of more capital

Lot of bloody sense to me, I like Lansdown as well but sometimes like you say, he does his own thing and he can really balls it up but you've only got to look at the facilities at Ashton Gate to see the benefits that we have gained.

Our opimions don't matter a jot, money is power and that is where decision are made.

exactamundo ive always liked your posts wiz and like the fact that you wouldnt go to the gate when the little fella was in charge.
Lansdowns choice and his little puppet I think,
Thought he wasn't a bad player but never management material,
why get excited about buying mourinho a really expensive bottle of wine to prove what you weren't any way near as good as him
