I think that is a very short term view. If you can win the league ok but we are not in that bracket next season are we? Otherwise you need to be able to cope with Europe because there is little point playing all season to get there if you can't cut the extra games and travelling. We have done both with Pochettino and Harry and we came out stronger each season following the Europa league and then moved up a notch and played CL football. We should expect to play in Europe every season if you want to think of Spurs as a big club.
I guess it depends on how much you think we could benefit from not being in it. Winning the league? That's extremely doubtful even with added rest in my opinion. Top four and a trophy? Possible even if doubtful, top four is gonna be tough, Chelsea are adding top quality and Utd are bound to fork out more dough. Top four only? I wouldn't really consider it a massive success. I'd be more than happy if we went all out for Europa if we get in it next season. It may be 'easier' to win that and therefore qualify for the CL than it would be finishing in the top four.
I just think not being in Europe could possibly be worth 10-15 points more over the season, that could be the difference between finishing 3rd to 6th maybe?
The opposite might be true. If Mourinho wants to pick a consistent XI for the league every week, then he could build up a strong squad with the Europa. I'm not sure if he'd be willing to risk it, but he doesn't seem to keen on rotation at the moment. Gazzaniga, Walker-Peters, Vertonghen, Dier, Rose, Skipp, Ndombele, Bergwijn, Alli, Sessegnon, Lamela, Foyth and others sit outside our starters now. A little tweaking for balance and some additional quality for the first team and we should be able to get through the qualifiers and group with that lot. A new striker would be required, of course, plus replacements for some of them, but we need squad depth. Will we get the investment required and will the players be willing to join if we've got no European football?
Hojbjerg Watch They're definitely not getting KWP... :::EDIT::: They're definitely not getting KWP now...
£25million and he was supposedly Jose’s number one target? Surely Spurs wouldn’t let him slip through their fingers if that’s the amount required to get him.
I’m just going on previous seasons when teams have missed out on Europe and then done well the following one. 2 seasons of Europa financially wouldn’t get close to missing out one year and then in the Champions League the next would it?
See Southampton asking us to pay £35m for him a day or two ago Enjoy your mental gymnastics... Champions League prize money - Base fee for group stage: €15,250,000 - Group match victory: €2,700,000 - Group match draw: €900,000 - Round of 16: €9,500,000 - Quarter-finals: €10,500,000 - Semi-finals: €12,000,000 - Losing finalist: €15,000,000 - Winning the Final: €19,000,000 Europa League prize money - Base fee for group stage: €2,920,000 - Group match victory: €570,000 - Group match draw: €190,000 - Group winners: €1,000,000 - Group runners-up: €500,000 - Round of 32: €500,000 - Round of 16: €1,100,000 - Quarter-finals: €1,500,000 - Semi-finals: €2,400,000 - Losing finalist: €4,500,000 - Winners: €8,500,000 The long and the short of it is that our minimum expectations in the CL, namely making it out of the group stage, would bring in more money than winning the Europa League This is not a coincidence...
Madness But backs up my opinion of missing out on Europa if it helps get CL through the league next season.
I’m still confident if Spurs want him then he will be a Spurs player, £25million is a good fee for everyone all things considered
Ridiculous figures, but that's just one part of it. We'd miss out on TV fees, which are equally lopsided admittedly, plus any possible crowd money, if that's ever possible. I think it would also diminish our draw as a club, even though that's mainly down to cash.

If we treat the group stage in much the same way Man Utd or Arsenal have, using it to give some youngsters some games, I can see the benefits for the likes of Tanganga, Skipp, and Parrott (and possibly the likes of White, Cirkin, Bowden etc) That's the one thing that ultimately caused Poch problems: in his first couple of seasons he had more opportunities to give youngsters some playing time, especially in the Europa League, but once we were establishing ourselves in the Champions League and making a crack at the title the only chances he had were in the domestic cups...but that was only dependant on having a draw that would allow us to, for example if we drew a League One team we'd give a few youngsters some playing time, but if we drew a Premier League team we simply wouldn't
Hojbjerg Watch Looks like reports of a £25m Everton bid are utterly false https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/spo...erton-pierre-emile-hojbjerg-transfer-18638814
Quite right too, don't haggle over £5m or £10m if the guy can make the difference between CL or not. That could equate to £60m per season for the next few years.
