If you get ahead say to the byline and play the ball back you can’t be offside. Poveda came back from an offside position that’s why it got ruled out.
I think where you may be getting confused WJ, is that a player can't be offside if level with the ball when the pass is made, thus you have interpreted that as you can't be offside from a square ball, discounting the fact that regarding the players position who receives the pass. I believe your interpretation would have been correct prior to 1863, as that was when the offside law was introduced but in all seriousness I can't remember when the law was changed to allow players being level with the ball, as the offside law changes every other season these days.
