Obviously it's the end of season positions so at this stage there may be teams out of position that matter but I tend to break the table into 3 sections and go with these targets if you want promotion: Top 8 (which is 7 opponents and us) - draw at home, lose away - 7 points. Middle 8 - Win at home draw away - 32 points Bottom 8 - Win home and away - 48 points Total - 87 points They're obviously minimum targets, and if we ended up in the playoffs that form against the topsides would be worrying (it's a bit like what Huddersfield have done in recent years now I think of it). Bristol drawing was probably on target and I was satisfied at the end of the day, not having listened to or watched the game I'm not saying it was a fair result based on the game, just that I'd have taken it before the game started. Donny is probably going to be a disappointing one that means we need to take the points from a harder game instead but these things happen and so long as the overall totals balance up I'm not too worried. 2 draws against top 8 sides away from home and we've got the same points, but two of our rivals will have 2 points less than in my basic model.
We lack cutting edge really. The goals against Bristol and Donny were brilliantly worked and the football involved was beautiful. But when it comes too it we don't really seem to finish many chances :s. Don't know what it is but as soon as we get one we can't seem to find the target.
I agree with your comment but can we please as a fan group stop giving Brighton so much respect, they've just got promoted and on paper are no better than mid table. This was the problem last year, the league offered loads of respect to the promoted teams, none of which had particularly strong squads and they walked all over us. The teams that fear other sides are the ones that finish 16th and down, the ones that think they have the best players are the ones that over-achieve. Let's be the latter.
A lack of 'Cutting egde' was particularly evident at Donny, their midfield left some huge spaces for us but we kept being hesitant and letting them off, they were so poor it could have been 3 or 4-1.
Win at home - Draw away! (Seems like a good motto for me......at least in the absence of a regular, dependable performance?)
No it's not, but if we end up on 87 points we're not likely to be relying on goal difference for promotion. If we got 87 and came 3rd we'd be the first team in this division for 10 years to not get automatic promotion after getting 85 points or more.
