Alligator hunters in Florida used to use black babies to lure them out, so that they would attack the child and the hunters could make their kill. Things change as we (hopefully) become more civilised. There's no need to hang onto the past, it's not sacrosanct. A lot of it is ****ing disgraceful tbh and I've got no problem calling it out for what it was.
Yep, original Punk Rocker. Saw The Damned and The Adverts on their first tour, in 1977. Cut my hair and hid all the Hawkwind and Led Zep albums under the bed. Saw The Clash countless times, The Stranglers, Ramones, Heartbreakers. Don’t tell anyone, but I was always more of a hippy at heart, just born a bit too late. Punk rock was our thing, the hippies were our older brothers, cousins etc. Never happier than when drinking mushroom tea at free festivals - usually in Wales.
Knewwww it. You do strike as more of a hippy type, but as you say you just missed it. Obviously I have no first hand knowledge but I watched a Sid Vicious doc the other day and that was mentioned.
Poor old Sid. Of all the long list of Rock n Roll casualties, he was the least equipped to deal with fame, and the last person who should ever have been given heroin. R.I.P. John Beverley
I always found it interesting that Sid couldn't play his bass, he was just used for his appearance. Essentially just chewed up and spat out by the industry.
Yeah, he was. He couldn’t play at all. It was a standing joke that a lot of punk bands couldn’t play, but in most cases what that meant was they were learning on the job. Paul Simenon, The Clash’s bassist, had never played a note when he joined the band, but he got quite accomplished in the end. Mick Jones and Joe Strummer asked him to join the band purely because he looked the part, but they made him learn to at least strum along in key and in time. Not Sid. Sid couldn’t play a note. They took him on tour to The States, and his bass playing was ****ing awful. All he did was pick fights with members of audience. And the more he did that, the more the band’s notoriety grew, and the more Malcolm McClaren egged him on. Glenn Matlock, the original Pistols bassist, was a fairly accomplished musician. But Lydon hated him.
classic footage in the great rock and roll swindle of Sid viscous hitting somebody over the head with his bass
The story goes that Napoleon ordered the defacing, by canon fire, of the face of the Sphinx, because it had ******* features. If white supremacists can deface ancient artefacts on racist grounds, I will cry over the removal and destruction of the statues of white slave traders.
Never repeat any of it again. Well you can if you like, but expect a few strange looks at the very least.
Nice to see you back mate after your mini flounce off. I not justifying it, it is what it is and it’s history, lefty Marxists want to change the world but they won’t.
I’m not sure what it is that you are questioning? The fact that Napoleon ordered the defacing of the Sphinx? Or my opinion that I could not care less about the removal of right wing elitists from bygone days?
I didn’t understand your point about statues. It was quite incoherent, as are many people’s opinions on the subject. You’re not alone. Napoleon didn’t deface the Sphinx.
The world is constantly changing. Thought you were leaning towards Buddhism, in which case you’d have known that? What is history btw? Whose version? Who writes it, who questions it, who reviews it? What sources are used to understand it?
Taking sides rarely achieves anything. The point I’m making is simply that if the World didn’t blink an eye when the Sphinx (among many artefacts of the ancient world) was defaced, why should anyone care about the destruction of statutes of war mongers and racists of more modern times? I understand that its defacement is strongly attributed to him.
Look, lads. This thread is on its arse ffs! We need something to set it alight, again. BOOM! You’re welcome.
Typos that you try and style out, don’t really set anything on fire tbh mate. Apart from integrity obvs.
