    Preview: Stoke City (H)
    Tuesday, July 14th 2020

City could make it a third-consecutive as they look to reproduce their flowing football with the visit of Stoke City this Wednesday (July 15th, 5pm).

But can the Potters handle the heat?

For the third game in a row, the Robins are set to face a team battling for their Championship status, this time in the form of Michael O’Neill’s Stoke City.

The Potters have spent only a handful of seasons in the third division of English football – their last coming in the promotional 1991/92 campaign - but they are currently just four points off the drop to League One albeit with a better goal difference than their rivals.

They endured a poor start in the current Championship run, having failed to pick up a league win until October when they beat Swansea 2-1 away. Stoke have won marginally more games (8) since the turn of the year, two of those from their last three outings, and they were victorious over manager-less Birmingham City on Sunday, with whom they have now gone level on points with just above the relegation zone.

Defeat for O’Neill’s men today, alongside other results, wouldn’t see them drop into the bottom three but it would certainly crank up the pressure ahead of their final two games against the in-form, promotion-chasing Brentford and Nottingham Forest.

Marvin Elliott scored the winner on Tony Pulis' return to BS3
    MEMORABLE FIXTURE
    Bristol City 1-0 Stoke City
    Saturday, October 27th 2007
    Sky Bet Championship
    Scorers: Marvin Elliott 35
    Att: 15,012

Gary Johnson hailed his side’s “team effort” in a 1-0 win which closed the gap on league leaders Watford to three points.

This would be Stoke City boss Tony Pulis’ first appearance at Ashton Gate following his short stint in charge of the Robins during the opening months of the 1999/00 campaign.

His return came in defeat as Marvin Elliott's left-footed drive which picked out the top corner 10 minutes before half-time was enough to seal the points for Johnson’s men.

Rory Delap's attempt just after the hour-mark looked to be heading goalwards until City defender Bradley Orr made a crucial block to keep the home side on top.

“We worked hard all over the park and a lot of players other than Marvin deserve to be on the score sheet. People keep asking me whether we can stay near the top of the table and all I am saying is that we will take games one at a time and see what happens,” said Johnson in his post-match interview.

The Robins went on to make the play-offs before that infamous 2008 final at Wembley.

Bristol City: Basso, Orr, Carey, Fontaine, McAllister, Sproule (Skuse 90), Johnson, Elliott, McIndoe, Noble (Byfield 14), Trundle (McCombe 90). Subs not Uued: Henderson, Murray.

But had Warnock or Hughton come in after Cardiff game and got 2 wins and a draw in first 3 games you'd be saying how brilliant we've been since LJ left !! <doh><doh>

We were generally 2nd best last night, especially in midfield and because of that Paterson was totally ineffective and poor all night, his pass across our own penalty area just beggared belief and Weimann was even worse, Smith tried manfully but was overwhelmed. I repeat once more we need to build a fully functioning midfield to accommodate Paterson, otherwise the same midfield problems will persist and we certainly cannot accommodate Paterson and Weimann.

Once more I felt sorry for Wells and Diedhiou who had nothing to work with.

Benkovic scored a great goal and looks comfortable on the ball but I am struggling to see a 19 mil defender in him, was at fault for the equaliser caught ball watching and lost the player he should have picked up.

DaSilva was outstanding again, we will do well to keep hold of him.

Holden proved to me why hopefully he is not being considered for the permanent job, his first substitution of Eliasson for Hunt was ridiculous and never destined to work, a draw suited Stoke, we needed a win it was IMHO a negative move.

king of the vision of hindsight …. whats to lose? 1-1 a point means nigh on impossible … 3 pts means at least in with a chance .. went from 4-4-2 t0 3-5-2 had Eliasson provided an assist or scored or indeed we scored the winner anyways you would have been extolling the virtues of a fantastic move ………….. "what a clever coach etc etc "

Not at all, even the commentators believed it was not a good move. Both said we had nothing to lose and should go for it.

It was never going to work and never did, it was negative and the sort of substitution Johnson would have made.

Isn't it funny that anything other than a win, "the faults" would have been what LJ would have done.<doh>........But he made us a force in the championship, which no other manager achieved since his old man.......it's laughable!....

I'm not going to slate LJ on here unnecessarily but all this praise he is getting from some about his quality, successes and achievments means Steve Lansdown, Jon Lansdown the owners, Mark Ashton the ceo and the board of directors are all cuckoo, they've sacked him despite all of the good he has done, sounds like wrongful dismissal, despite him not achieving set targets, I would rather use the nickname he called himself as a desription of his tenure.

" Streaky Johnson", throughout his managerial career he has constantly had streaks of winning runs, followed by streaks of losses, we have suffered that constantly at Bristol City FC, he has never won any honours and was ultimately fired because of his failures, I won't go into all of the internals, man management, Mr Tinkerman habits but there was plenty thats caused concerns I'm sure at senior levels that contributed towards his demise.

He has now moved on, so I hope we will and very soon.
