I hope that we all try and put a bit of perspective on this - Bramble has been arrested - he has not been charged (so far as I know) and certainly has not been convicted of anything. Obviously if he is found guilty then he should be dismissed - in fact if arrested I would look to see if we could properly suspend him on no pay whilst the process takes its course. I don`t think that he would cope with playing in front of thousands of fans (home or away) who would take the piss - his head would be all over the place. Please though can we try and put some perspective on matters - sexual assault has (as others have mentioned) a very broad range - I have represented someone charged with it myself when the extent of the allegation was that he touched her arse - in fact he was stood at a queue at a bar and was pushed by others trying to get served - he was acquitted. In terms of the number of times similar allegations have been made I think there is a risk (with such a high profile individual) that "mud sticks" and there is a risk of some publicity seeking going on - no evidence to back that up either way mind you. Drugs - being in possession seems to be the allegation. The "tests" referred to by many are therefore of limited value - they might go to mitigation of any sentence to demonstrate that he is not a user but possessing is possessing not using (indeed once ingested the prospects of securing a conviction for possession are remote!). To be convicted for "possession" it will be necessary to prove that 1. Whatever was found was an illegal substance - it will be sent for testing 2. That it was physically in his possession - if it was in his house/hotel room/clothes/bedside drawer etc there might well be ways of establishing that it was not, in fact, in his possession; 3. That he knew it was in his possession (regardless as to whether he knew that it was an illegal substance) - so if someone has planted it on him and he was unaware then he has a defence. Please let`s not get too involved in the "no smoke without fire" band or argument - I see a good number of cases (none of which involve celebraties) where the reports to the police are made for no good reason other than to cause the accused grief. We only have vague details from one side at the minute, if well advised I would suspect that Bramble will not make much of a statement publically other than to deny matters, to do so would potentially prejudice his case at trial - he certainly shouldn`t tell the world what his defence will be... If he is guilty we should get rid - no question If he is charged and then acquitted - he should be allowed to remain subject to any impact that the publicity will have on his ability to play football In between now and the final outcome I would like to see him suspended without pay (I would doubt his contract would allow it though) but certainly made unavailable for selection as that would cause further disruption at this time which the team could certainly do without.
