Gazza, 43, surprised cops by turning up at the stand-off on Friday offering to help negotiators. The former England and Newcastle United star said: "I'm gutted. He was a good friend of mine. He added: "I took a chicken, bread, a fishing rod, cans of lager, some jackets, something to keep him warm, a Newcastle top, everything. "We were just getting onto the pedalo when the police stopped us getting through and wouldn't let us go fishing." Gascoigne said he believes Moat's decision to take his own life was brought on by cops stressing him out. He said: "If you've got police surrounding you and putting pressure on you, then... obviously he did snap." But he added: "The best thing though is that he didn't shoot anybody â he just shot himself. I think he would rather shoot himself than have a long stretch in jail. I wanted to help him."
