Morning fellow Yids, Not much Spurs type stuff in the news today, match threads and team selection for Shamrock & the NLD have been discussed/covered so, thought I would see what you guys think is your high point, or best moment of being a spurs fan but also, the lows which we as loyal Spurs fans are have become all to used over the years. This may well depend on your vintage as younger fans may only really remember our last Carling Cup win or one of the CL games from last season for example where as an older fan may remember the double season. Having been born in the late 70's I only really got into it in the mid 80's, missing our FA cup wins in the early part of that decade. My low is the cup final loss to coventry. I was only about 9 and just have this memory of feeling absolutely crushed by it at the time. High point is hard one to nail down. CL qualification game against city was great, beating the Arse last season afer being behind, but probably Carling cup win against Chelski, in a pub full of blues who had been giving it large, when the woody header went in me and my few spurs mates went ****ing nuts. good times.
Ive had many ups and downs as a spurs fan but only recently as im a younger spurs fan! Most memorable is the city game when we qualified for CL in a bar in spain on my own with a few city fans in the bar! Met my mates after the game and had a good night! Another one is the Arsenal game last season watched it with my best mate in Tenerife (who is a Arsenal fan) both went to different bars by accident and ended up meeting aload of girls and mates who we spend the rest of the holiday with because of that game! Also the Carling Cup win when Wooders scored the winner as most of my family and mates are Chelski fans so was good to finally get one over them! Lowest points are hard cos i try to forget them i used to love Teddy Sheringham and when he left i was gutted. Ermmm i suppose losing out on CL last season and the horrible start when we was bottom for so long! At the moment im excited with the spurs team and really looking forward to the future so hopefully more highs then lows in the next few seasons!
I think we can all agree it's quite exciting being a Spurs fan Highs - qualifying for the CL (pretty sure I ran round the house after we beat City), beating Inter and AC last season, winning the Carling Cup against Chelsea and the Arsenal match last season where we won 3-2 were pretty memorable. Lows - missing out on the CL, being bottom of the league (2 points, 8 matches ) and probably the 5-3 result against United - that one sticks in my mind as I remember being so elated that we were 3-0 up at half time, then to be crushed at the final whistle But still - as you can tell by my list, most of the highs are in the last few seasons so we're clearly heading in the right direction Here's to more! COYS
I blame my mother for that one! I remember coming out the car with my parents and listening to talksport they said we was 3-0 up and my mum said its a game of two halves i wouldn't speak to her for a few days after that!
Been supporting since about 91. Remember my dad getting well excited at Gazza's SF goal that year. My high would be the Inter win. The AC win (mentioned above) was good, but it was more attritional. The Inter win was an annihilation! I also loved the Ossie era of the famous 5. Not much glory but by heck the non-glory was good! The low would be the loss against City in the cup. If i recall we were 3-0 up and playing against 10 men at half time. Their best player (Anelka i think it was? Edit, nope, Barton) was the one sent off too. We lost in NORMAL time. We were at home too Edit: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/fa_cup/3447235.stm
One memorable high - when we scored against Utd in the last minute at OT to win the game 1-0, followed immediately by a memorable low when the goal wasn't given
I concur with a lot of these but a personal favourite of mine is when we were away to Southampton in the Cup. Possibly because I was away on a ski trip and had given up going out on the apres ski for the evening to watch it, and then we went 2-0 down, at which point I very nearly left the chalet. And then came Ronnie Rosenthal's finest hour and we ended up winning 2-6. Slightly off topic, but IMHO it doesn't matter as much if a player was generally good or generally bad over a career of matches, they can still be a legend if they do something particularly memorable... like Rocket Ronnie's hattrick in this match or Stalteri (sp?) winning goal away at West Ham for the 3-4 win.
Lows - getting relegated (yes I'm old!), losing the semi to Arsenal in 83 (?), seeing Pat Jennings sold, Campbells treachery, missing out on 4th and not giving Real a proper game in the quarters Highs - promotion back to Div 1 on last day of the season with a 0-0 (against Soton?), seeing Ossie and Ricky running out to the ticker tape welcome, Ricky's goal, Clive Allens avalanche of goals in 87, Gazza's semi final goal in 91, Lineker's winner in the final, every game Ginola played, Woody's goal against the Chavs, Crouch's goal against Man £ity (not the own goal ), Kaboul's winner agaist L'Arse, Bale's hat-trick against Inter and Crouch's goal against Milan. If pressed, Fab's funny handball.
I'm another relic. My first trip to the Lane- v Stoke 1972 we won 4-3, the 81 replay against ..hmm oh yes Man $ity & Ricky Villa's goal. Lows- being relegated, Gooners golden era(when they used to win things)
Being a Spurs supporter is not for those of a nervous disposition. I've been a supporter for more than 50 years - since I was a kid in North London. The highs, of course, have to be the 60-61 double years. I was at every home game, including the Weds night we beat Sheff Weds to clinch the title. Got a belting off my old man for that, as I had school the next day, and I wasn't supposed to go. The lows - getting relegated, obviously. The main thing really, for those my age, is the sense of frustration at being so close, so many times; but never quite managing to put together a side as successful, again.
High 1967 FA Cup win against Chelsea as i was watching on TV with my brother who is a Chelsea fan.Two lows losing to Coventry in the FA cup final( my TV was smashed with a beer bottle)and the same as HD,Jennings leaving when he didn't want to.There are many more but that is what being a Spurs fan is all about.COYS
In recent years the low was the Berbatov saga and losing Carrick. The highs signing VDV, and retaining Modric. For me these events represent a major change in self assessment by Spurs and lead me to hope that we really are on the verge of great things.
Totally agree about the change in self assessment, the future is the brightest it has been for a long time at Tottenham. Once the stadium thing is sorted out we will really push on. The increased revenue will enable to pay some higher wages and retain/attract better players
I enjoyed lennons last minute winner against liverpool last season! My wifes waters broke almost simultaneously My first trip to WHL was the 5-1 victory over Norwich back in 1993! The 5-1 over the goons was great as was our sublime performance against Inter at home last season There have been quite a few lows as a spurs fan but I really think we are starting to push in the right direction and I think the future is very bright for us indeed.
High and low all in one night taught me about being a spurs fan. I was 5 yrs old and my old man took me to see Tottenham v Benfica european cup semi final 2nd leg 1962 I think we were 2-0 down from the first leg and we went behind then Bobby Smith equalised before h/time and Danny Blanchflower put us in front with a pen 2-1 then with 1min left Dave Mackey hit the bar. The rest is history, Not even a bottle of pop and an arrowroot biscuit in the pub after would take the pain away. Other highs winning euafa cups v Wolves and Anderlect. Gazza V the Arse. The incident in Flintwick on the way back from Derby(i think) Klinnsman signing 9-0 v Bristol City. Beating Leeds to stay up. Villa's goal against city Other lows. Judas going to la arse Pat Jennings going to la arse The night la arse won at the lane to do the double ( got detention for 2 weeks for leaving school at 12-00 to queue up) COYS
The lows are other Spurs fans - there's ones for whom the glass is half empty, but then there's the ones that say the glass is broken and will never be fixed...
That or ja606 posters... That's one thing I don;t miss about old606, the utter misery that emanated from certain posters because Spurs were drawing 0-0 with only ten minutes played, meaning we'd invariably lose. There's gallows humour, and then there's electric chair pessimism...
