I believe the term my dear old Aunt Rose used was ‘He’s had a touch of the tar brush hasn’t he’. Talking about one of my pals who came out as a gay man ‘Aww, bless him, it’s such a shame isn’t it’ <laugh>

She was so innocent and genuinely didn’t have a bad bone in her body. When people are talking about these events and slave masters from centuries gone by, I think sometimes what it was actually like living back then is forgotten. That’s just how it was, that’s life.

The UK’s a fair place to live, now.

Over 100 police officers were injured by the BLM movement. The same BLM movement who’s goal is to remove police funding, requested police protection on one protest because of fears for their safety <doh>

If this was a protest that was genuine the vast majority of the country would have been behind it and it would still be going. Instead we’ve seen them riot, rip down statues, assault police officers, loot shops and cause thousands of pounds worth of damage that the tax payer will have to cover. Now they’ve got bored and gone home. If they truly felt oppressed they’d still be protesting until proper legislation for change had been put through.

As I predicted the UK BLM momentum is fading because their slogan, image and aims are messy, unclear or plain daft.

I just looked on RTG and there's been 4 posts today, the UK news is about Glasgow, corrupt Tories and the weather.

When the pubs reopen the students will be off spending their grants and infecting each other ...

... statues will remain undamaged, shop windows intact and policemen will have to spit at each other.

The novelty of protesting about a US criminal has worn off it seems. The protest is a bit like Boris Johnson ...

... lots of fist waving, bluster and aggression at first but now looks aimless, confused and unsure how to proceed.

For somebody who is so absolutely convinced that he knows what BLM is about and supports their aims, you sure are good at making the same arguments as racist white people in America. This was about the police disproportionately attacking OH HERE WE GO AGAIN.

We get it smug. You're too egotistical to let something slide without an arrogant 'LOOK AT HOW WELL I DID PREDICTING THIS' post.

Thank god you've done SO much for the black community in the past, or someone might look at your posts and wonder when you're ever going to come to the conclusion that even a single black person in America has been killed by racist police in recent times.

Why the hell should Smug or anybody on here be concerned about helping the black community <laugh>

Why are you so obsessed with black people? What about Asian people, they’re a minority too...

I've simply commented that the BLM momentum is fading, which is evident.

My work for the Salvation Army is totally indiscriminate ...

... my conscience is crystal clear.

Unlike yourself I don't discriminate by colour, creed or religion.

Not all black people mate, just the big headline ones.

There are many times more black Africans suffering invisibly in their own country than in America ...

... the African police in Nigeria, Kenya, etc are the worst in the world for persecution, oppression, murder, etc.

Some people might think the descendants of slaves, who got out, are the lucky ones.

    It's quite weird to watch.

Foreign players, in England, bowing down to honour a convicted American criminal who was mistakenly killed by a useless cop.

And they're doing it solely because the victim was black ...

... if he'd been a Chinese born American there'd be no printed shirts, no taking the knee and no clenched fists.

    It's all very strange.

Personally I totally support the BLM movement in the USA as racism there is a massive cultural problem. The protests over here seemed a bit odd to me. Protesting about something that happened in another country - what exactly is anyone hoping to achieve. All seemed a bit like protesting for the sake of it - probably just an excuse to break the lockdown. Pulling down a statue of someone that no one outside of Bristol had ever heard of before seemed a bit pointless as well to be honest. Not saying slave trade was a good thing but whether a statue is there or not there achieves nothing to be honest.

Or is prejudice in Bristol no more now that the statue has gone? Personally I couldn’t care less. Never heard of him before, not bothered if there is a statue of him or not. Roman emperors were pretty mean to Christians but I wouldn’t demand we run around Italy demolishing **** either.

I used to live near a place called La Turbie near Nice. The Romans build an incredible monument to Augustus with a relief of all the local tribes they'd beaten and subjugated.

As soon as the Romans cleared off the locals nicked all the usable stones for building materials but left the relief as a 'who's laughing now you Roman bastards' reminder.

They now have a very nice tourist attraction that brings in a never ending income for the town.

Thats the way to do it.

Colston will be stuck in a dark corner of a back room of Bristol Town Hall and quietly forgotten. The chance for the young black people to see the statue, learn from it and even laugh at the dead bloke is gone.

A typical case of missing the point.

Completely agree with the last point. Hiding the statue away does nothing for the discussion around historical slavery. Which is a shame as I think that discourse could lead us to the issue of modern day slavery, which I hppen to think is more of an issue tbh.

The Colston statue is like a modern day morality tale whereby a wicked man comes to appreciate the errors of his ways, reforms and becomes a great benefactor.

But we'll forget all that and embark on a mad Stalinist airbrushing of a history that actually happened ....

... then we can all have a new improved history that we can keep tinkering with until it's perfect <doh>

I love how many people who don't care about the Colston statue are writing about how it's not the right thing to pull it down :D

I can't believe how many people who 'totally support' the aims of BLM find as many ways as possible to have a pop at the methods. It's been about 3 weeks and smug hasn't agreed with a single thing that they've done, he hasn't acknowledged that a single black killing by the US police has happened because of subconscious racism, he doesn't appear to believe that black people in the UK have it any worse today than white people, and he doesn't seem to agree with any of the specific things that BLM have raised.

Saying 'I'm against racism, I don't see colour and we should all be treated equally' is a noble sentiment that is undermined when you make excuses for literally every specific case of racism brought to your attention, and go out of your way to criticise anyone who dares to make a statement or gesture indicating that it could have been related to racism.

Oh and so you know, all these genuine racists in America, the ones who Bob and others have said are a blight on society? They literally, word for word, use the same arguments as you, but I'm sure that's just coincidence.

You just relentlessly misquote me, see what you want to see and bore people to death.

I've no intention of allowing you to take up the idiot cudgel, from your idiotic tag mate Shameless, so I won't bother to correct everything you've claimed.

This is an open forum for debate, not a platform for some blinkered radge packet trying to bludgeon everyone into believing only he has the truth.

I don't care if you accuse me, as you will, of running away but you and your arrogance spoil thread after thread ...

... plenty of people have said as much but you just never step back and have a think.

You've gone on 3 threads this morning, specifically to have a go at me, and it's pathetic.

2 of those posts were in response to your posts about me, and the other was where you talked about SAFC fans like they were less worthy for not believing you :D what do you think I should be silent while you have a go at me? Such a hypocrite.

But I'm sure you have no intent to set the record straight because quite simply all of the above is - based on your posts - true. The statue part was aimed at Bob, btw, who said exactly that.
