Lee Johnson says the Bristol City players didn't do their jobs in Sheffield Wednesday loss
The Robins' poor form continued as the Owls took all three points from Ashton Gate.

There were no excuses after last week's poor performance in losing at Blackburn Rovers according to Lee Johnson.

But this week: certain Bristol City players didn't do their jobs as Sheffield Wednesday became the fifth team in the last seven to have played the Robins and taken all three points.

City started their return to playing in BS3 well, but conceded twice from corners to all but end any hopes the club may have of making the play-offs this season.

A spiralling run of one win in the last nine league games has supporters switching off and the promotion dream is slowly dissipating for another year.

And Johnson pointed the finger at individual player errors.

"It’s so frustrating because I thought our performance was much improved," said the head coach following the game.

"I thought the energy was good I thought the boys hustled and harried and the attitude was good.

"There was a great save in the first half from Nathan Baker's header, and I then thought Nahki Wells should have got a touch on the wide delivery - maybe he had one eye on the goalkeeper I don't know no.

"And to concede a goal really against the run of play in the way it was in such fashion was really disappointing. Defenders have to do their jobs.

"They have to do their jobs in the box. And if you don't win the boxes then it's very difficult to win a football game at this level. And again it's been two individual errors really, in terms of actually doing their jobs.

Johnson said that Famara Diedhiou - previously proclaimed as being world class at defending set-pieces - had not trained earlier in the week but he had simply not been chosen for Sunday's game, with Benik Afobe and Andi Weimann instead played in uncomfortable-looking wide positions.

The season is limping to the finish line in a similar fashion as to the two previous seasons.

"The first goal looking back on it was cleverly timed to be fair," said Johnson analysing the goal.

"It does create a blocking set-up. But nobody lays their hands on Bakes [Baker] so we're not going to be able to moan at that. And if you do get blocked then there's got to be communication for the spare player to then go and be free, which was Ash at that moment.

"It was a good header but a poor goal to concede and one that drives you mad as a manager," said Johnson following the game.

Bristol City head to Nottingham Forest on Wednesday next.

Last week there was no excuses according to LJ, this week he would only choose players he trusted, now he says players chosen didn't do their jobs, how long can this rhetorical tripe be allowed to go on?

Way too long already Wiz. I just don't think any player would get excited playing under his lack of footballing nous.

His remit is year on year improvement, it looks increasingly unlikely that will be achieved this season, as you know Wiz I’ve stuck with LJ up till now on the whole, but unless there is a massive improvement over the next couple of weeks I think his time is up.

'We’ll dust ourselves off and go again' - Johnson
    Sunday, June 28th 2020

Head Coach Lee Johnson believes City can start winning games after an improved display against Sheffield Wednesday but admits they need to do better in both boxes.

While Johnson hailed his side’s attitude and effort, the Owls held out to earn the 2-1 win through goals from Connor Wickham and Massimo Luongo.

Nahki Wells headed home to reduce the deficit in the second half but, despite some later pressure, the Robins couldn’t find an equaliser.

Johnson believes City didn’t deserve to lose the Sky Bet Championship fixture but he felt his side needed to improve in the final thirds of the field.

    "We go again"
"I can’t fault the attitude or effort and that’s why it’s a tough one to take but we have to move on and go again.

“We can get those wins and that’s why it was better today. There’s something to hold on to but it remains the fact that in any division in the world if you don’t do the jobs in the box it will be difficult. That’s what hurts today, but we’ll dust ourselves off, retrain tomorrow and we go again Wednesday (v Nottingham Forest).”

"We didn't do our jobs in the box"
“I don’t think we struggled, I thought it was simply we didn’t do our jobs in the box,” he said.

“The attitude was good, the character was good, we did lack a bit of quality in the final third after some good counters and breaks but we had a great chance from Bakes’ header and Joe Wildsmith has pulled off a great save.

“Nahki Wells should score from the wide free kick, maybe he had one eye on the keeper and then we had to do our jobs in the box, it’s as simple as that. I don’t feel we deserved to lose today, it was a much better performance.

“Goals always change games. The second goal is really poor to concede and I’m most frustrated about it. The first one 'yes' but it’s clever play, we have to communicate the blocker better but the second one you’ve got to put your foot through it.”

There was encouragement for Benik Afobe, who made his first start since August because of injury, and Wells helped to lead the line, grabbing his third City goal in the process.

    Afobe and Wells partnership
Johnson continued: “We didn’t feed them as well as well as we could have done. Benik held it up well, Nahki looked dangerous and the one he had in the second half, he scored his goal but we didn’t hold the ball up well enough centrally. It doesn’t matter if you’re a big or small player, as a midfielder, the breathing time it gives you by tucking it round the corner, and they (Sheffield Wednesday) did that quite well.

Only one outcome i'm afraid LJs time is up, Sheff Wed in their last two away games conceded eight goals and we could only muster one, very poor set up how can you play Afobe wide left, so lightweight in midfield defence apart from Baker (although he lost his man for the first goal ) passing woeful from the whole team, we need a replacement, who, Chris Hughton springs to mind probably wishful thinking.

I rather hope that no-one will use the pandemic as an excuse because this late season poor form has happened for too many years to be acceptable. Lee will continue to make poor decisions regarding players, and their place in the squad, along with the same poor decisions regarding team shape and just about everything else. The dream of Lee taking us higher and better must surely be in question while the season is grinding to a close and I wonder what Steve Lansdown might be thinking right now?:emoticon-0101-sadsm

I'll go along with that but I think he has blown it already, his post match pontifications and drivel gets worse, I can't keep on knocking our team but a battering loss against Forest and a dismal home defeat against Cardiff would just about be the end game for LJ, surely.

Yes , I agree , his body language today suggested he thinks so too, it’s possible of course we could somehow win the next 3 or 4 and everything will all be sweetness & pie, but it’s not likely is it

why do we play so many players out of their best positions Afobe should play as a number 9 not on the left wing, there is no drive from the centre midfield where is Kassy Palmer ? why was eliasson not in the team as he can cross a ball, we could not even pass the ball to our own players I have followed City since i was11 years old i am now 76, i hoped i would see us in the Premier but now have lost all hope a good job we have the points we have because if Lee Johnson stays we will finish near the bottom of the league.

Leapy Lea, Streaky Lea, Teflon Lea, he has been there before, the benevolent SL has saved his skin when he has sacked others for less, I wonder how LJ will twist this scenorio, 1 win in 9, pathetic results., we will all swallow it and he will carry on, just watch.

Not this time , unless somehow we manage to win the next 2 I can’t see him staying , even when he had the 9 game losing run we still managed year on year progression , there isn’t enough time to do that now. Unless as I said we somehow can manage to win the next 2 . It is small margins , now I’ve had time to reflect had wells got a touch to the free kick when it was 0-0 or had the keeper not managed to somehow keep Bakers header out who knows , I just think it’s too late now .

I can live with the odd loss if we are playing well, but we are not. 2 years ago when we were beating Man Utd and co on our cup run, we played flowing attacking football and we were getting plaudits from everywhere, now look at us, clueless. Long balls, second to almost every ball, no overlapping runs from wing-backs or midfield, it's turgid at the moment, and if it continues, then SL has to at least consider if LJ has gone as far as he can?

Btw, I'm not and never have been an LJ hater, just because he played under his dad at our club!

This is what i really can't understand. If he was able to get his team to play like it then, why not now? If anything, the players at our disposal now are generally better (midfield excluded to a degree), so should be able to do as good a job, if not better.

Is it over coaching? Is it over thinking? I know LJ says it quite often, but get back to basics!! Players in the positions they were bought to play in and let other teams worry about us, not us try to negate the opposition all the time.

See the season out and then get rid of him after the last game, as we are going backwards fast. But there is no point in changing the Manager right now.

Get rid now, the chances are that the closed season is going to be short, get a new man in and let him assess what he has and what he needs and who needs to go and make it a clean sweep 1st team coaches as well.

I am not sure whether you are offering that as an excuse or like most people offering it as another example of Johnson's utter incompetence?
