Poor error of judgement by https://twitter.com/AirAds2 to go along with this. They'll probably be back peddling and going into PR overdrive tomorrow.
I suppose it's knowing the intent behind the message. If police just got a general call, can we fly a banner over the Stadium, it would depend if anyone had the intelligience to ask what was on the banner.
I just googled Burnley Town Centre, nope, still not making any sense to me... please log in to view this image
Burnley is an extremely poor area, with about 10% of the population being Asian. There’s been a history in the area for over a decade now, of the far right feeding off the poverty and inciting racial divisions.
If my memory serves me well back in 1969 Gillingham fans just hated anyone who was not from Gillingham
It’s pretty grim mate, albeit I can’t say I’ve ever had a problem in Burnley and personally I’ve met a few nice people from there, as I did a bit of business in that area back in the day. But then again, I’m white.
Can't remember it being like that. Back then it would have had a decent town centre, along with Chav Town, generally economically vibrant retail areas but for some reason the whole of Medway, with the exception of Rochester went to pot. I always felt the pedestrianised of Gillingham came too soon, one of the first I can remember being done, it was said it would kill the Town and it did. Obviously these days, pedestrianisation is seen as a bonus, but we're talking about long before internet shopping (I think). Then the dregs moved in. You always had corners of them, but again social deprivation fooked the place up, and nothing was ever done to put it right, total neglect. Rochester (pubs/bars) is as about as close as you'd want to get to the place these days....oh and the football ground of course
I remember walking through all the alleyways leading to the ground and thinking that I wouldn't have fancied that 20 years ago as an away fans!
Yeah, true. That's how the Fulham fan ended up getting killed I reckon due to those rat runs. I have used them a few times, but try to avoid them if poss.
Libby - I actually thought they had closed the rat runs off, but i was escorting a few away fans to the correct section one time, so they got no bother, it was then I realised the rat runs were still open.
This would have been about 12-15 years ago mate so no idea but I definitely remember walking through some alleyways on the way to the ground, though I was obviously a 'home' fan that day. Wanna say you were playing Rotherham and won 3 nil but could be imagining that.
Rotherham used to have the worst away fan rat run in the league at their old ground. Ran the full length of the ground and lead from the Main Street to the away end, frightening that was.
