That’s what his real downfall is...he can’t find the men to do the job...they don’t make them like that anymore

Football isnt about playing one way...the latest way and that is the only way. If he has the players to implement his tactics...it’s still a winning brand of football.

Formations seem to be like fashion trends...it’s pathetic

The same supporters that think Jose has had long enough think Ndombele needs time...makes no sense to me

Jose's outdated in the sense his style is frowned upon by some but if he gets the right players with the right mentality, it's still extremely effective.

As I said on the Utd matchday thread, I think I can see what he's trying to do here at Spurs and that's create a side similar to his Madrid team from circa 2011-2012 which is known as one of, if not the best counter attacking side in history. For about 60 minutes on Friday I saw similarities with that style, we just obviously a) need to do that over 90 minutes, b) cut out the mistakes and c) utilise better equipped personnel/ subs (which may require some additions to the mould more adequately).

For anyone interested, here's a vid of that Madrid side, if you watch it you may see where my head's at with what I think - you may have to click the "watch in YouTube" option as not all embeds play on forums:

Neither are the right fit for Spurs imo.

Ndombele isn’t fit enough to handle the PL pace, put him in Spain or Italy and he would shine.

Surely he’s not trying to create a replica of a side from nearly 10 years ago?

Hopefully the Man Utd game wasn’t a sign of what’s to come and we will see more positive tactics against West Ham

Guardiola’s been using the same tactics for about 13 years now, not done him any harm.

That Madrid side were lethal, broke La Liga scoring records if I remember rightly. If we can be a fraction as good as that side we’ll be sweet. Counter attacking football is really enjoyable if done right. We played the possession game under Poch for 5/6 years, it’s good to go with a different approach now in my opinion and I think we’ve got the personnel to make it happen with a few tweaks here and there.

Isn't counter attacking football winning the league this year? And the Leicester year?

If you see my old posts I said exactly the same about Mourhino before he came to United and I followed La Liga heavily during his time there. To the point I would argue the toss about it with @CFC: Champions of FFP x2 . But what I realised very quickly once he arrived is that he just doesn't have that same hunger or drive as he did at RM. I still don't buy the stuff about his approach being outdated or how football's moved on. It really hasn't. And if he was 10-15 years younger he would still be on top of his game. But he just doesn't have that eye of the tiger anymore and a heck of a lot of his persona and the effectiveness of his tactics which we saw at Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid was down to that.

    You could be right Trebs.

Obviously for me at the moment I’m at that stage where I’ve gotta try and hope/ believe he still wants it.

In fairness to him, up until we lost both Kane and Son, only Pool and City picked up more points than us under Jose and whilst there’s been some dog awful performances and results since then, there has also been glimmers that he is trying to make something work.

We’re no doubt the weakest side he’s taken over since before his Porto days so I’m hoping that he joined us with that desire to really prove himself - not that’s he’s got anything to prove - but just reassert himself to the world kind of thing. I think barring a few positions we’ve got a group of players that should be able to play how he wants, as long as Levy backs him in the summer too I’m intrigued to see what he does.

If he ****s up and leaves/ is sacked though, I’ll just go back to calling him a **** again, lol.

    Spot on DH

His Madrid team scored 112 goals that season...a record.

it’s about having the personnel to fit a system...many systems work. Lesta didn’t play tiki take boring ****e...they were very direct...they did it beautifully. They were dynamic to watch that year, electric once on the front foot.

So many ways to play the game

Look at Tanguy...everything suggests he’s got it all...yet he fails to deliver...see, don’t have the personnel with the right mentality. Our fan base will make excuse after excuse for him aswell.

Yeah but let’s be fair...you’re still crying but he delivered you two major trophies and your highest league finish since Fergie left...yet you still got nothing but negativity towards him.

You’re just a spoilt United fan mate....or at least you was...hopefully not so much now that you realise you’ve joined the chasing pack.

Tanguy has contributed nothing to our team so far and he has been here for months. He needs to start performing.

Well he did score that goal against Villa...but yes, we need and are right to expect far more from him given the profile of the signing and how much we paid. It’s especially unforgivable given that many of his problems seem to have stemmed from a lack of application.

Jose has praised his attitude during the lockdown and has made positive noises about his attitude and integration into the team now vs. earlier in the season. He’ll get another year and rightly so, but we need an awful lot more than him given his potential.

And the thing is if Jose really is getting Tanguy to get fitter, which judging by pics he does look more streamlined, as well as improve his mentality, in time he can be perfect to play the “Xabi Alonso role” for us. He’s got the skill to get out of dangerous positions and the creativity to make those defence splitting passes that can set the likes of Son/ Bergwijn up for the counter. He’s probably the best passer in our team but he needs to be fit enough to put in the graft as well. I’m still holding hope he’ll come good, I think with him he’ll either go on to be one of the best CMs in Europe or end up in Russia/ Ukraine/ China within a year or two, no middle ground.

Spurly thinks me talking about Mourhino's time at Real Madrid and how it differs from his time at United is me being all negative.

I should list all trophies won in any post I make about him even when it has nothing to do with the point being made.

    <rofl>

The thing with Guardiola is his using the same tactics over and over actually has harmed him, namely his stint at Bayern as they went from winning a treble in 2013 under Jupp Heynckes to strolling to the league as standard but going backwards in Europe while massively inflating the wage bill to do so

It can also be said that, on paper, The Sheikh Mansour Team should be walking the league every season while making inroads in Europe - yet not only has their domestic form veered wildly for his tenure, he's failed to get them past the CL quarter finals - and even we've managed that...
