Both. The 78's collection of which I have a few 100's, they were given to me by a colleague who emigrated. They're all boxed up in my attic, majority of them have a small or little value, though I found a amongst the boxes quite a few collectors items that seemingly are now quite valuable. I'm hoping those will increase as times rolls on. I have no personal interest in the records themselves they're mainly lesser known classical and operatic recordings.
Thing is Smug I’m not religious at all as I don’t believe in any of it. Well I know that religion exists but you know what I mean!! But I know the SA do a great job and we regularly donate to them. We are in a privileged position so whatever we can do to help, we will.
I like Big Youth, but the only ones I’ve got are on the Front Line compilation LP’s. I mentioned the Gladiators and Culture earlier in the thread, if you like Big Youth, you’ll like them
I have a lot of Jamaican stuff from that era, got a few singles bought in Kingston particular favourites of that era are Max Romeo, Dillinger, Trinity and of course The Wialers but there are many others, I have the Two Sevens Clash album, I also have, but cant play, are the Reggae Sunsplash concerts that were shown on Channel Four and have never been repeated or bettered. It was a special era even for JA. The Rasta stuff has been overplayed, mainly by home grown tbh but the Island throbs as you probably know.
War ina Babylon, Max Romeo is one of my all time favourites. I’ve seen the Wailers a few times, the first down Hartlepool docks believe it or not. They were on with Black Uhuru. If you haven’t seen the film “Rockers” it’s well worth a watch. Brilliant opening scene with the Abyssinians Sattamasagana.
If you ever think about selling your albums, I’ll buy them. Or get yourself a record player. I’ve got a load of old vinyl, always brings back great memories We went to Negril last year, had every intention of going to Hope Road in Kingston, but thought better of it. It was a bit dodgy to say the least.
Nice to hear other folk have heard of them! I think it was 85 when they were on at Hartlepool. Had tickets to see Mykal Rose who was the lead singer at Wylam brewery last year, but it got cancelled. He couldn’t get a work permit.
It was the Upsetter that produced Max;s records at that time,hes a mad genius and worked with everybody in his day. also seen the Wailers, at Tynemouth one freezing night no Bob or Peter but they still put on a show, only the Barrett's left. by that time You did well to avoid Kingston, my fav, town in Jamaica is Port Antonio sublimely beautiful and mainly peaceful. But its the people and the music that make it so special.
My duo do Spirit of Radio in our set. Love Rush. It certainly would’ve got likes off me and comments. Got into Rush when I was in a band mid to late 90s. Loved them ever since. Teddy Lee has an unbelievable voice and is an awesome bassist. Neil Peart was phenomenal not only with the drums but he wrote most of their lyrics too if I remember! I was at the scorpions gig in 1980, they were superb. There is an audio recording on youtube of it. Im sure it was late October....then AC/DC November 5th, and Iron Maiden the 25th. The City Hall has just become a tribute band venue now.
Think that’s what you call “eclectic taste” I’m much the same. Rocker at heart (free, purple, rush, zeppelin, early Bon jovi, whitesnake, rainbow) along with things like the beautiful south and Paul Heston/Jacqui Abbott! Even some Heorge Ezra if I fancy chilled easy stuff (although it’s on Spotify not CD!! I’m down with the kids!!)
I'd never heard of her before I read your post but her voice/style do remind of someone else - I just can't think who (it's not Kate Bush).
