As did John Lennon. Context is everything - they both used it in the ironic sense, as opposed to black rappers who 'owned' it. I saw a young lady at a BLM march the other day talking about how the word was spoken out during her English classes when they were studying Of Mice And Men. I can't put myself in the shoes of a black person, but I can sort of identify with Chinese characters: and I find it hard to study period literature without the contemporary language used. I know Dotun Adebayo o 5Live has said much the same thing. But as said, monumental times.
I bought I love The Sound Of Breaking Glass. Saw him at De Montford Hall in the late 70's, with either The Stranglers or Joy Division on the same bill. Can't remember which. I saw the Buzzcocks there too around the same time (1978 I'd say, though I can't stake my life on it).
agreed but i just meant it would be bound to be brought up since at present every "indiscretion" ever made is being dragged up as some sort of heinous crime .
Oliver's Army has the phrase 'One less white ******' in it , which is obviously parlance for white trash. There was also an incident when he allegedly got drunk and used the phrase 'An ignorant ******' when he was trying to praise, as I read it, Ray Charles and his music. Think it might have been Bonnie Rait(?)* took it wrong and thought he was being racist, which he obviously was, though that was supposedly the opposite of his intention. * edit - Bonnie Bramlett. (No, me neither).
See i've never really understood all this. I don't say it because I know it's offensive, but one time when I was in the states, it's all I kept hearing black kids say. I know stuff like this is about context but...
Been a nasty incident in Reading tonight, several people stabbed and two taken to hospital by air ambulance. Was the scene of a protest earlier today but no link has been made to this.
Looks really ****ing bad that. Apparently 3 dead and 2 being resus in hospital. 'Not linked' to the BLM protest, but it seems a bit random to happen in the same place ?
