Through my own eyes and personal experiences as well as those of my friends and family. I take all media with a grain of salt as frankly they're all after the same thing, sensationalism.
All over this board, and others, the media is endlessly ridiculed. I don't know one person who heeds anything they say. This isn't North Korea. (NB, I'm not being racist or basing my views on North Korea on the media, it's just a bit of fun.)
This has been a really interesting thread for me and one I have followed closely. Smug’s example of the 5 North Africans may appear racist to anyone comfortably in their bubble and never been responsible for the welfare of hundreds or thousands of people with little or no time to make a decision. It illustrates perfectly the difficulties that people in that situation face every day they are on duty; whatever action they take is open to scrutiny and criticism and easy to judge retrospectively. Far be it from me to speak for Smug, but what he described is a Dynamic Risk Assessment to inform his decision. To those who have never been involved in security, it may appear the decision to refuse entry is racial profiling but in reality it’s offender profiling based on geographical intelligence and nothing whatsoever to do with race.
Good post I was coming back from the States 2 months after 9/11 and suffice to say security at LAX was pretty heavy. One family got stopped and searched at every checkpoint. They were obviously muslim and i can understand why it was so much more difficult for them at that time. You're right in what you say, it's Dynamic Risk Assessment of which sometimes racial profile plays a part of offender profiling. If for arguments sake a gang of Chinese bank robbers were hitting an area i don't think that the police would be checking vehicles where the occupants were of Jamaican descent.
Media: all forms of information; books, TV (reality tv, social realism, news, debate and various pay channel services etc) newspapers, billboards, adverting, movies, the Internet information, entertainment and online social media sites How can you say all this doesn't inform you?
Good post mate but I have to be totally honest, which is what I was in the post you're quoting. Part of the decision would be based on race. Races and nationalities played a big part in our crowd control, I'll give just one example. If we had a Bastia v Nice match there'd be loads of Corsican hooligans coming off the ferry, and they despise the French believe me. They'd be over for the whole weekend and would want cheap accommodation so would book mobile homes into which they'd cram 20 blokes. The train station to Nice was 250 yards away so they'd pile on, not pay and get off to the match. After the game they'd get off the train and come into our bar or restaurant and start taunting the French. On one occasion we had to get the pump action shotguns out and really go for them. The guns were loaded with 2 sand cartridges followed by 2 rubber and the last one lead. If the first 4 didn't stop them you'd be glad the 5th would, just take a look at the scenes in Dijon to see what goes on mate ... ... scary stuff.
How can you say you're not influenced by the media ... ... or, unlike the rest of us, are you able to rise above it all. Have you been influenced by the media in relation to BLM, is it all genuine or is some misleading propoganda?
Offender profiling might not be to everyone's taste but it is an important element in the security procedures that contribute to our relative safety.
As Ozzymac posted, racial profiling is an important part of offender profiling. I've been there, done it, and got the tee shirt Smug, I understand how decisions are made on the front line.
I didn't Almost certainly not, but some media are better than others at informing us Yes, I've been texting about it Back to topic: I do not believe that the opinions we have about the culture of some races or ethnicities is based upon our experiences alone
Where did i say it doesn't inform me? I said i take it all with a grain of salt. When it comes to people, i form my own opinions. The media is banging on about BLM at the moment. Have a look for the young 15 year old girl who had the **** kicked out of her whilst waiting for a train im Melbourne. The reason for the attack? She was white.
I'm not sure you can And people (not you personally) do say things like the Chinese are like this, Americans are like this or even English food is bland and greasy and they cannot cook. And people say them having never met or rarely met anyone from these nations or even been to a Wetherspoons
Many do and close themselves off from alternative viewpoints just because 'it came from the Guardian; for instance
I see what you're trying to say. The question is though, how did these stereotypes come about? In the 1800's there were stereotypes around with no social media, tv, pay tv etc so how did they start? Generally i would say that they started from someones personally experience at some point in time and expanded through the years. Bottom line is that somewhere, sometime, someone had an experience with a different, race, sex, culture from which an opinion was formed.
