After the fire cannons and light shows of recent seasons they've decided that the 'product' still isn't quite American enough so have made it a game of 4 quarters.
I was wondering about that. There were rumours before USA 1994 that the Yank FA were pushing for ad breaks midway through each half.
I thought this yesterday, more opportunism from the virus, will be as you and Libby have said, getting ready to bring ad breaks in. Souless empty stadiums, eventually capped off with ad breaks for armchair fans, who will no longer have to go out in the winter.
LOL, it’s due to the fact that the players have spent 3 months sat on their arses, and these games are in essence pre season, plus they’re not usually playing at this time of year, and they’ve included the drinks breaks in case it’s hot. They’re not new, they’ve been sanctioned during WC’s before - because - Summer.
I’ll be off if that happens. I’ve enjoyed the racing from Ascot on telly more than the football this week anyway.
They haven’t been sanctioned at World Cups though have they? Not actually stopping the game for drinks, or have I missed something?
I must have missed that then. I remember Jack Charlton desperately trying to get water on the pitch to his players in 1994, and since then players have been allowed to go to the touch line to get a drink. Can’t remember ever seeing a game stopped for it on 22 minutes though. Didn’t happen in the last WC did it? To be fair, it’s probably me just being suspicious of anything new; for instance, I disapprove of pretty much everything that’s happened in England since Mick Jones left The Clash in 1983. Still don’t like it though. Thin end of the wedge.
It’s never been done at a set time, it was at the refs discretion if the temp is at or above a set level. I can see why they chose to include it for these games, it’s no biggy for me, but it’ll be a tad pointless for the night games a week or 2 down the road when the players have got their match fitness back.
If I remember rightly, the reason is to ensure that all players only use their own individual bottles. Players grabbing nearby bottles as and when needed, is not allowed for obvious reasons.
