I must thank you for your polite address. What, however, would be much more appreciated would be an answer to the question posed. "When someone doesn't fit the stereotype can they gain a positive advantage from that?" I then gave an example explaining the possible context.
My answer is no, or I certainly hope not. Might be wrong. A person who does have a stereotype in mind of say, dope smoking rasta Jamaican probably is a bit racist, or not met many people of Jamaican descent.
Like I said, element of ignorance with any stereotype, although appreciate that is not what your question is about. Personally would find it a bit sad that someone gained an advantage for not living up to a negative stereotype, but might be naive.
Racial stereotypes eh? I often hear Scottish people ranting about how they're seen as kilt wearing, bagpipe toting, tartan clad loons ... ... which is exactly how they appear at every major sporting event or large gathering. Funny that ...
Made that point earlier. Most football fans hide behind a stereotypical image and often love it. A lot of those Jocks on a normal day will be suited, booted and sober.
.... or seen groups, like Bob Marley and the Wailers portraying themselves as dope smoking rasta Jamaicans
As with a lot of their type I'm pretty sure they'd have exaggerated things for commercial gain ... ... very smart fella was Bob.
Thought I had. Don't think it will give an advantage but I might be naive. Reading an interesting article on stereotyping and racism in a Sunday paper recently. Fully appreciate this is not what your post is about, but the gist was the challenges around racism are much more complex than the overt racism of, for example, the recent police brutality case. Racism is often more subtle and shown through stereotyping, and how we perceive other ethnic groups. Interesting stuff.
And thank you sir for now according me the same I do, however object to being openly called a smartarse (also subsequent targeted posts) and have sincerely apologised if I appear that way to you. In my life no one has ever used such a word to describe me. That could be a matter of interpretation, for instance a white lad gains positive advantage simply by being who he is and in saying that, please understand I'm not intentionally being evasive. Stereotypes: which one are you referring to? There are quite a few to choose from;- Irish are stupid The Welsh like leeks and seem to be quite keen on sheep The Poles create little Warsaws and bring down the housing value The Scots are tight as **** Afro-Caribbeans are indolent, banana eating skunk heads (apart from the ones who play football for the team I support) Ginger haired people have to steal themselves away from the sun, there's is a dark and mysterious world and apart from anything else they're ugly as ****! All of the above are equally ridiculous in my view and none can be supported in any way.
I can't recall referring to you as a 'smartarse' (please post proof of your assertion) but it would appear that you continue to use evasionary tactics. rather than answer any questions posed.
