What would have been bad about losing to Greece in the final? It would have been great to have reached a final in the first place.

 

Getting to the final is great unless you lose it.

 

Saints going out to Sunderland in the 3rd round of the league cup in 16/17 would have hurt less than the late Zlatan header but I wouldn't have preferred that.

Honestly reckon we'd have won that tournament anyway had we beaten Portugal, or if Rooney hadn't got injured. Same thing essentially.

Agreed but I think an unfair compairson

A fairer comparison would be if we lost the final to e.g. Ipswich Town.


The Cup Final for Saints was a great day because we absolutely held our own in a game everyone expected us to lose. My point was it would have hurt way more if England had made the final only to lose to a team everyone would have perceived as a game we should win.



But given it's all hypothetical, it's a fairly moot point either way

 

Yeah fair point actually. I remember back in '03 hoping that Arsenal would win their semi as I couldn't bear the thought of losing the final to Sheffield United.


I was fully expecting us to win 3 years ago mind, until Romeu hit the post at least
