Virtually every wealthy philanthropist in C17th was involved in some way with slavery. It was endemic across the world. That was that time, very different now. It's not politically incorrect to talk about slavery now. But it was in the 1960's and 70's. You would never mention slavery to someone who was black. And it was regarded as racist to call someone black. We were all taught to say "coloured". That was that time, very different now.
