There is never one single cause of death SH - there are always a multiplicity of factors. If a man of 85 is more likely to die of Covid 19 than a 20 year old is then can you put down as 'the cause of death' that he was 85 ? The truth is that if the corona virus brought somebody's life to a premature end ie. they died even just 6 months earlier than they would have done anyway then it is recorded as a corona death in Germany. If a person who has Corona walks under a bus then it is not recorded as a Corona death - which appears pretty logical. But I repeat that there is no one single cause of death in most cases - if an 85 year old chain smoker who lived along in poverty died of Covid 19 then what was the 'cause of death' ? Smoking, age, poverty, or Covid 19 ? If the Corona virus actually brought a persons life to a premature end then it is recorded as such in Germany.

Try the Daily Express site, same story. You need to learn to appreciate that things are more complicated than simple crude numbers.

I am surprised that the Telegraph has used material from this individual. Sikora is the widely discredited right whingers 'advice for hire'. He *isn't* a professor yet claims to be one, and he was the one the Libyans handed money over to in exchange for the Lockerbie bomber's "3 months to live" diagnosis He has been warned repeatedly by Imperial College to stop associating himself with them or claiming that title. He is also a campaigner for privatisation of the NHS and a hard right Tory. I think that if SH looked a little deeper he would not wish to associate with him either

I don't actually 'need to learn' anythíng in this context SH. Wouldn't every football manager after a 0-6 defeat like to say that things are more complicated than simple crude numbers ? The fact is that Britain has the second highest death figures Worldwide and many of those were unnecessary ie. would not have died if a lockdown had been brought in earlier, and had been more consequent. Your clown of a PM hung onto the fairy tale of 'herd immunity' until events forced him to do a u turn on this - thus bringing many lives into unnecessary danger.

    This man is totally discredited.....

In any case a simple comparison of overall deaths for the period last year with the period this year is even higher... because it seems medics were advised not to put covid-19 on death certificates unless clear evidence....

So the figure virtually all mainstream statisticians suggest is much higher than the 'official' numbers...

It appears the 'excess deaths' now exceed 63000. The cause of death on a certificate becomes somewhat irrelevant. so what caused this extraordinary increase. (It certainly wasn't motor accidents! ) Some are certainly due to the failure to get treatment 'cos of the NHS being preoccupied wirh Covid-19. I think it's reasonable to include those as 'Covid' deaths.
If we can appreciate that Ferguson's prediction of the herd immunity method prevented a truly awful outcome, then it might be worth appreciating his opinion that half the deaths could have been prevented if the govt. had taken action earlier. Whatever, this govt. has blood on its hands (as in unnecessary deaths caused by govt. action/inaction). In fact the abysmal performance of the govt. was seeded in 2010 by Osborne and Lansley (2012). The NHS had been prepared until the govt. stepped in and ruined the margin for error, and then ignored the advice of its own trial.
They can try everything to deflect criticism, but the numbers are irrefutable.
The most depressing thing of all is that I'm not surprised - just ashamed that our decades of peaceful stable (if not particularly representative) government have got us to this horrible place in just a few short years.

Government figures released today that showed 8,117 individuals testing positive for Covid-19 between May 28 and June 3 were referred for contact tracing. Only 5,407 (67%) were reached and asked to provide details of recent contacts. ONS surveillance data however suggested that there were at least 23,000 new symptomatic cases during that time period, meaning that only about a quarter of symptomatic cases had been found by the test and trace system.

Matt Hancock said today that 85% of contacts had been traced. This is deeply misleading as it relates only to the 5,407 individuals who were reached by contact tracers and ignores the 75% of new cases that were simply not found.

We also learned that the tests that have been included in the test figures are useless.

Q: When will antibody tests be rolled out?

Harding says at the moment the science does not tell you whether people with antibodies have immunity. So they are including testing that doesn't work in the figures.

This information was available before the press conference, yet Hancock still went ahead as though everything is wonderful. How much longer can they keep this sort of misinformation up?

"It's muddled thinking - I'm not sure what the government was trying to do with this virus."

    Neither were they...

The logic is clear.... and sadly the Govt got it wrong and it has cost many lives.....
Not one of my science colleagues agrees withs the govt lockdown strategy.... easy to say on reflection but no wriggle room at all on this

England’s chief nurse, Ruth May, was dropped from one of Downing Street’s daily coronavirus briefings after refusing to publicly back Dominic Cummings behaviour during the lockdown.
A No 10 Spad [special adviser] asked her directly how she would answer the Dominic Cummings question and she refused to play along and told them she would answer the same way as Jonathan Van-Tam. She was dropped immediately from the press briefing.

When a report has been concluded, just like a report into Russian involvement in the Brexit campaign, it will be buried. Russian report was available just before the 2019 election, but is still locked in a safe somewhere.
