How far are we going to go with all this though? I've no problem with what happened in Bristol, but it seems people want this to escalate further, to statues such as Churchill and many others to be reviewed. Not sure how good your memory is, but I used to have run-ins with Fan over MLK, how basically he thought he was a shhite, and I'm sure he made claims about abuse of women. Hence why we never got on, he was very good at demeaning the good in people, and MLK was a favourite target of his. Well women have rights to, if I take onboard Fan's claims, should we pull down the Lorraine Motel, which is now home to the museum of National Civil Rights, well of course not I would say, but abuse comes in many forms, not just slavery. My point being should we start ripping everything down that held an unsavoury history in the explotation of human beings. Whether they be black, white, male, female...shall we start pulling down Catholic Churches, there would be many a people whose argument would be as fitting. Let's not forget there was probably much medical and scientific progress passed on from the Nazi's, is it right to still use that research. Just wondering where this whole debate is going...
I want to know when it’s our turn. I was having a smoke with a few lads a couple nights back, two of them are black and obviously this topic came up. It might be different in certain parts of the country but these guys don’t feel threatened or oppressed living up here. That’s come from them. Funnily enough one of the lads was giggling telling me he feels like I’m more oppressed than him because I’m restricted from doing certain jobs because of my mental health and he genuinely believes the MH is a bigger struggle than being black in this country.
Well the anarchists masquerading as protesters would readily pull down any establishment monument because it’s what they do.
The symbolism is important Like when the Iraqi’s took down the statue of Saddam or the Russians took down the Stalin one. Yet at the same time actual buildings commissioned by these former leaders are probably still up. They can be converted and re used...but no one wants to see a larger than life depiction of the person staring at you on a regular basis...the psychology is totally different.
I don't pretend to know my history and people will probably correct me, but as I see it, we won a war against the Nazi's under Churchill, his statue probably represented more, the service and price those people paid, from all walks of life. If the Nazi's had won then many people today, would not have those same freedom's to protest. But with limited knowledge on history, I appreciate that's a very narrow view. What I'm attempting to say, Fan would probably from my discussions with him, hold a view that a memory of MLK should not exist. I'm completely the opposite, but I also am not seeing the reasoning to rip down Churchill either. However, at the end of the day it's a fooking statue, and I'm too old to defend all this bolloxs, the world belongs to others, if they want to rip everything up, who the fook am I to argue with them.
It won't end until all statues and monuments are gone. People will always find things in history they disapprove of, I've seen Facebook statuses that we should be destroying pictures and such of Ghandi, that was a BLM supporter who I know writes for the Daily Star, I happen to know her from school. People are very soft now, very easily triggered. Just watch a YouTube video of people my age and a little younger watching 90s shows, anything offends. The mass demonetisation of historical YouTube channels because they teach "controversial" facts about history. It will get to the point were we not only cant have a statue of Churchill, but we also can't learn about Churchill. That we can praise soldiers, but can't really talk about WW2, online its already going this way. If these morons get into our parliament and our governments then it will be taught in schools.
I wouldn’t rip the Churchill one down on the back of a BLM demo...he might have been a racist with his views but he did lead the nation in WW2. Most leaders are ****s..we are dealing with men not prophets. I was on about the slave trader one everyone seems to be in a huff over. Just some fat local businessman who exploited humans...he’s no biggie.
