Completely agree with you on this, Churchil and Hitler had similar racist views, WW2 was fought to defend the British empire from the Germans. It was not to fight against racism if the war was about racism it would have began years before 1939

Messing with the Churchill statue was really stupid. Undeniably he is a popular British figure, by attacking a statue like that you're now marginalising yourself even further from the mass majority of people who would find that an aggressive action against them. I've seen Black Lives Matters supporters defending themselves on twitter and Facebook because they're receiving backlash already. I'd consider it a PR blunder.
Anyone got footage of some black people doing the vandalising on the statue? Could be an inside job to get the knuckleheads fizzing into action and present them with a ‘legitimate’ reason to bring up their own agendas
Assuming it's correct... White American Officers: We demand that one of the bars is for coloured troops only. Brits: Ok... It's hard to gauge how much of the decision to make all of them for black troops only was anti-discrimination and how much was just to put a finger up at the officers for asking for something they had no right to ask for (which would be very British). Either way it's hard not to smile and be proud.
I’ve not really seen anyone disagreeing with that tbh. All it achieved was to give certain sorts an excuse to decry the entire protest and the cause.

I was supporting what you said about it not being about racism. The Americans were incredibly racist at the time, just not as much as the Nazis. A racially segregated army fighting racism doesn't make much sense. Emmett Till and Rosa Parks came in 1955.
It was a stupid thing to do. But on the very long list of "stupid things people have done this week" it comes pretty low down.

There was a US aircraft carrier that used to dock in Southampton, when on NATO exercises. The naval dockyards at Portsmouth or Plymouth couldn't accommodate this thing, it was huge, so it put up in Southampton, which was used to drunken Swedes off the tankers and container ships, but not hordes of yank sailors taking over all the pubs and clubs. Anyway, most of these yanks were friendly and polite, even when drunk. There was rarely any trouble with the locals, everyone got on pretty well, and the local drug dealers, pimps and prostitutes all did a roaring trade. But here's the thing; this was only about 40 years ago, but it was completely obvious that the whites and blacks from that ship didn't mix. If a group of white US sailors walked into a bar where black sailors were, they'd walk out, and vice versa. No obvious animosity, but there was clearly a total colour bar, on a ****ing warship where everyone's lives depended on each other.
