Just before Christmas 1984 I bought some florescent green terry socks from the market [ok, it WAS the 1980s and I WAS in my teens!] Any-hoooo The first time I wore them was on that last Saturday before Christmas, when Pompey played Oxford Utd at water-polo at Fratton Park. This game was the commentary game on BBC Radio, [Sport on Two in those days]. It was also on The Big Match the next day. Pompey won 2-1 of course, thanks to Alan Biliey's 88th and 90th minute headers. So I wore my green socks again on Boxing day, when we drew at Brighton. My mum made me put them in the wash the following week-end and, thanks to her, we lost 4-1 at Sheffield Utd. Suffice to say, Pompey never seemed to lose when I wore those trusty socks - and it's all my mum's fault that we didn't get promoted that season. So do you, or did you have any lucky items of clothing/charms/trinkets that seemed to do the job for you?
I am waiting for the first person to say "lucky underpants that they didn't take off for say 4 weeks following an unbeaten run" !!
Here are some highlights of the match in question. Notice the length of the clip......
I remember seeing on regional TV news once about a guy (pub landlord) in Portsmouth who doesn't take his Christmas decorations down until PFC have been knocked out of the FA cup. Does he still do this that you know of?
I remember that match oh so well. I stood in the rain on the old North Terrace, equally soaked inside (from a session at the Artillery Arms - Friary Meux in those days I seem to recall) and outside from the torrential rain. Ever since then I have made it my mission to have a pint or two before a game. It doesn'y always work in terms of the right result but it softens the blow when we don't win! I shall be there tonight!!!
The song Beyond the Sea - when I hear that on the radio I know I'm in for a good day (very helpful when it's a sh1te period). Played it on Saturday before I left home - sweet goal from Erik the Viking - then heard it on the radio on Saturday night - which resulted in sister and brother in law humming the twilight zone tune all evening. Will be playing it in a minute so fingers crossed eh!
Yes hasn't he just! Obviously that's not the answer. Going to try wearing my Pompey shirt next. If that doesn't work then I'm going OUT and not listening to the match.
