I’d never heard of him tbh. But reading some of the stuff from Bristol, apparently it was a really contentious issue in the area, and they’d even had a vote on whether to remove it or not. Quite why you’d feel the need to have a vote on whether to remove a contentious statue of a slave trader or not, I’ve no idea, but maybe I’m missing something.

Since it was still there i assume the vote went against removing it?

Yes apparently so, by 55/45 assuming what I read was factual.

I saw an interview on tv about this topic today, I myself certainly dont' know the right or wrong answers to this, I can only portray what one black voice said, on the topic of history, would we put statues up of Hitler in public places, to remind us of history. His view was, they should be in museums for education, not in our face on the street. My words at the end, not his, but my interpretation of what he said.

They asked the council to move it into a museum, apparently. Now they have to drag it out of the water to do it.
They wouldn't even change the wording of the plaque below it, which read:
“Erected by citizens of Bristol as a memorial of one of the most virtuous and wise sons of their city”.

    Interesting fact of the day.

How many of you knew that back in 1833 Britain agreed to compensate the slave owners of the day for their loss of merchandise when the slaves were freed. The amount paid to the 46,000 slave owners was £20m, equivalent to £17BN today, and we only finally finished paying this off in...........2015.

I saw The Strokes and Oliver! at the Colston Hall over the last few years.

Wonder if people who haven't a clue what they're protesting about will now burn it down?

    Win.

I maybe should have added that they weren’t exactly errrmmm freed.

As the slave owners struck a hard bargain and they had to do an ‘apprenticeship’ that was basically them grafting for 45 hrs a week, for errrmmm....**** all........for 6 years.......
