As I say, graffiteeing a war memorial is stupid behaviour if true. But this quote is from that article, so forgive me if I smell a rat.

"Meanwhile, small groups of so-called ”patriots” and “football lads” were filmed patrolling war memorials and statues in central London.

However, the small initials “BLM” were daubed in black paint on the Cenotaph war memorial, and graffiti was sprayed on a number of Whitehall buildings, including the Cabinet Office."

I’ve noticed that too. Bit convenient innit ? Always seems to be ‘oh look the cenotaph has been attacked, this is outrageous’ instead of concentrating on the issue at the root of it all.

Churchill was a ****ing genocidal maniac anyway.

There was a demo ****ing years ago - could have been against the Iraq War, maybe before that - where someone, quite wittily I thought, cut a piece of turf from Parliament Square and used it to give Churchill a Mohican. Ever since then, the Daily Mail have had reporters all over that statue and the Cenotaph, hoping for an excuse to be outraged.

Jesting apart, damage / vandalism to any statue or memorial is unacceptable and the vandals should be caught, made to clean their mess up, pay for any damage and then be sent for 're-education'.

I saw that a statue of a confederate general was pulled down in Richmond, Virginia yesterday. For me that should also be condemned - the American Civil war was not solely about slavery, it was also about Southern states not wanting to be dictated to by a government in Washington. Brave men died on both sides and there were notable military leaders that merit a place in history - whichever side they fought on.

Roman Emperors suppressed half of Europe but are not now being defaced by ancestors of angry Gauls on day trips to Rome.

Respect is at the centre of these demonstrations ... a virtue that should be extended to all.

Allowed 4 million bengalis to die from starvation and then blamed them for it as they shouldn’t ‘breed like rabbits’

I remember that. And yes it was all over the Daily Mail and suddenly became the most outrageous act in the world at the time. Despite Blair and Bush fabricating WMD to start a war in Iraq

It’s inflammatory, but it’s not even on the same level as a policeman choking somebody to death.

    a distraction at best.

Sorry but you’re just plain wrong on that one. The slave owning Lee has become a poster boy for white supremacists and Neo Nazis in the States. Most of the statutes of him went up in the early part of the 20th Century as the Klan were gaining a resurgence. That particular statue in Virginia was already due to be removed for exactly those reasons.

My point was more one of principle ... but following your train for a minute, so if white supremacists in this country were to adopt Winston Churchill as a symbol, we would then have to remove all statues of him? ...

k realise there is an agenda with things on social media. Though there are other things which on social media which seems plausible all the figures are pretty similar from different years. Same argument is used on both sides that if stats don’t sit with their agenda then they are clearly fake news.

All this merely detracts from what people are protesting over.

That’s a straw man, but just to humour you, Churchill wasn’t a reputedly extremely cruel, slave owning, Confederate general. So, no.

Last night, I noted immediately the Cenotaph was used as some part excuse to condemn protestors. It astonished me when the comment was made, I think it was Sweats that had drawn attention to this. The reason I was taken back by the comment is yes I had seen graffiti, but I had not seen any on the war memorial.

Anyhow, I decided to do a google search this morning, and you was bang on Archers, by highlighting it was the small initials “BLM.” Probably some immature kid, but hey, it gave the haters something to throw at the peaceful protestors. But their not racist....oh no, not one little bit. Heaven help any kid that stole candy when they were young, with the mentality on here they would have been cast as criminal masterminds.

Never seen anything about Lee being extremely cruel to anyone ... indeed his Northern adversaries seemed to hold him in the highest esteem - both during the war and after.

I do recall he was born on a plantation... which could have made him a slave owner ...

... but you are, of course, right that Churchill wasn't a Confederate General <cheers>
