It’ll mean you and I are to blame when our world-beating track and trace system doesn’t bring the dead back to life and ensure we finish this thing with a low number of excess deaths.

We dont want a low number, that would be classed as unsuccessful surely

Well it’s over from police. Maybe a statement from Downing Street to say that Dominic Cummings regrets driving to castle, blah blah blan.

It’s certainly cut through more than anything I can remember for a long time so that’s wishful thinking based on not very much, surprisingly.

Not really as soon as normality returns people won’t give a toss about Cummings. What do you think that all Tory voters will say “ let’s now vote Mr Dull of Labour because Dom went on a road trip?” Of course not they will be more interested in Brexit and other things. He only needs to put out a statement to say he was wrong to drive to the castle ( as police will probably say) and it will be done... apart from a few upset lefties from the Guardian.

You aren’t this ****ing dense surely. You can’t seriously deny this issue has dented their rep across a huge number of people beyond those who know them for what they are already. People who had never heard of Cummings a week ago and have little to no interest in any sort of politics have been triggered by this. That doesn’t just go away.

What you should be concerned about is not how it sits with traditional Tory voters (although many of these are disgusted by Cummings), but how the working class first-time Tory voters feel about Cummings's behaviour and how weak Johnson appears in sticking up for him.

I will tell you something about politics Stroller (which I know you already know). A year in politics is a long time and unless Death is involved people will forget and move on. What the Tories need to worry about is the death toll from this and if the public blame them? People won’t give a toss that some bloke drove to a castle in 4 years. The only reason it’s got so much attention is due to certain elements of the media kicking up a storm and making sure they get the public on their side. As I said it was a stupid thing to do but it doesn’t deserve the media circus.

You’d like to think the actual government would be slightly concerned with the death toll whether their reputation suffered or not.

You don’t need to twist it Watford.
Anyway I thought you would be outside the BBC screaming about Maitlis?

People may well forget the details of what he did, but the arrogance and disdain for ordinary people won't be forgotten, nor will Johnson's weakness and obvious total dependence on Cummings. As you suggest though, this may well pale in comparison to the outrage that comes from the knowledge of how many people have needlessly died due to this government's incompetence.

I don’t think I’ve ever contacted the BBC about anything political. I bet you have.

Not politically. I have worked with for them on 5 occasions. I think they are top notch on many things apart from some of the news programs. However I know from the form filling and meetings that they are beyond PC. They have created their own environment which is more PC than PC.

Maybe Ellers is right and eventually the Cummings issue will be left in the dust, I suspect not though as Brexit still looms and he is the architect of that so he's not going to be disappearing any time soon. In the here and now though the current issue is having a very damaging impact on trust and confidence in the government which is dropping like a stone and at the exact time they are expecting people to get behind the track and trace app. Uptake of the app I think is now going to be impacted and this could have been avoided with just the merest hint of contrition.

Oh well with the police not acting any further, that’ll just push the message that one rule for them, one for everyone else.

This whole affair has caused so much damage, the actual offence itself is nothing compared to the actions or lack of since it became public, if he’d stepped down that would have been pretty much it who’d have thought with porkies flying left, right and centre it’s taken this for a lot of people to lose trust in the panto pm.
