Real shame what is happening at BAE at Brough and across the UK. Obvious sign of the global slow down and I'm not sure what can be done. Maybe diversification, I read somewhere that the lads at Brough helped the McLaren F1 team at one point developing some aero kit. Thoughts are with anyone working there... Will there be any industry left around Hull and East Yorkshire in 5 years time?
It's not good at all, I've got several mates working there and they're all very nervous. One of our veterans team jacked in playing this season, just in case he got injured and missed any time off work, bumping him up the redundancy list. I would think the obvious move for anyone leaving there would be to go to the new Seimens plant, though I'm not sure when that's actually due to open?
It is a sad day and my sympathy is with all those affected. Its another example of how successive governments have traded away our industry in search of quick returns for a small coterie that will benefit. I grew up within spitting distance of BAe (or Blackburns / Hawker-Siddley as was). I remember the Buccaneers getting hauled in on low loaders past our house from Holme Upon Spalding Moor as they couldn't land/take off from Brough. Either the runway was too short or Capper Pass's chimney was too close to the flight patch, I can't remember which. The family moved there during the 30s to get work and now it looks like the ones still there may have to be on the move again.
The runway is indeed to short to land some aircraft. For those who don't know what's happening.... http://m.ibtimes.com/the-first-bite-bae-looks-likely-to-announce-3-000-redundancies-219799.html
Now you remind me it was the too short runway for the Buccaneers. Capper's new chimney was why they had to stop using Brough as Hull Airport at a later date.
Isn't the Seimens plant in doubt now? I thought Germany were the favourites for that now becuase Seimens were pissed that the UK Government wasn't showing enough interest in the project. That's why Vince Cable shat his pants and hot footed it to Hull.
They confirmed that it was coming here last January and if things have since gone tits up, then I've not heard about it. I'm sure Brady mentioned it in his interview on Burnsy's show a couple of weeks ago.
Hopefully you're right. But I don't think they've made a decision just yet, I saw the Germany thing on the news last week. Looks like we are making real go off it though. http://www.thisishullandeastriding....says-MP-Alan/story-13349333-detail/story.html
Not been funny mate but why would a teenage Man Utd loanee have any interest in industry in the Hull area let alone mention it in an interview ?
I worked there for nearly 40 years surviving numerous redundancy occasions, It was a great place to work only the travelling got to me at times. 1954- 6700 people working there 1992- 4700, 2011- less than 2000, 2012- ? Sad very sad. Good luck to those who are affected.
those were the days. I remember getting home from school on the trains and almost being trampled to death down Saltgrounds or Skillings Lane as they opened the gates and headed for the special trains that were layed on. Then later I did some part time work at the Ferry and we used to have a load of pints part pulled ready to go on a Friday lunchtime as there was a mad rush.
Oregon Tiger-where was a stones throw away? My wife lived down Kingsley Close. We both work at British Aerospace. Now live in White Salmon WA. What is actually happening at Brough.
My daughter just called to say that so far, almost a dozen of her friends have set their Facebook status as 'Dad's lost his job'. Terrible.
I used to live in Arkley Close. Ours was the house with amber and black paint job on the windows/doors/garage. I haven't lived in Brough since the 70s but go back regularly and boy has it changed. As you can guess from the user name, at one point I lived across the river from you although I've moved back to England now. I did a couple of white water rafting trips on the White Salmon. Bloody cold it was.
Hulls greatest export has always been it's youth, when will we ever get a fair shake of the stick. So many jobs lost in the past 40 years, fishing, ship building, caravans and now Brough to mention just a few and of course all the other places that depended on them for business. Somebody down south dont seem to like us it seems like
This is a crying shame and I wish good luck to all the employees in this difficult time. Sometime next year I will be looking at possible apprenticeship placements and we were told all the way through school that BAE Systems was our best chance but as an option I think this is completely null. It gets worse that our only major option is the Siemens plant, and with all these redundencies it only increases competition for places, so this is terrible news for all in the city young and old and I worry about my future as well as feeling deep sympathy for all affected workers and their families.
Worked on the site a few times over the years but not for BAE. They are all a good bunch of people working there and I know a few who have taken redundancy over the years. Such a pity this is continuing to happen. Just hope things turn around and more projects are won. Good luck to them all.
