How can we make sense of the weather ?

Most of April was dry and sunny...often with the temperature in the mid 70F's and very pleasant to sit out in.

Yesteday and today 14th/15th of May I have got up in the morning to find that the frost protection has been on over night because of the plunging night temperature activating it......a disaster for gardeners who have been planting out new plants.

You are right, apologies. My memory is getting patchy. Only the other day I was able to dredge up what a Snickers bar was called before it became a Snicker (and I don't even eat them) but I can't remember the teams in a match I watched a week ago!

Neither Cambell nor Ferdinand were in the team, the CBs were Southgate and Adams... but the point is still valid: a very different look to the team than what we see now.

I watched about 5 minutes of that programme which was the lead up to the game. It showed a clip from Camaroon playing Argentina when they won against the odds. They showed 4 tackles which would have meant 4 players leaving the field these days. Ouch!!!! Sometimes though games were worth watching then for the brutality and even better when it was two teams you had no other interest in.

Eleven councils have have expressed concerns over the safety and timing of reopening English primary schools to some pupils from 1 June, supporting the teaching union, NASUWT, who says it said it remained "unconvinced" reopening schools was "appropriate or practicable". They are:

    Birmingham – Labour

Brighton & Hove – NOC (Labour administration)

    Bury - Labour

    Calderdale – Labour

    Hartlepool – NOC

    Leeds - Labour

    Liverpool – Labour

    Manchester City – Labour

    Slough - Labour

    Solihull – Conservative

    Stockport - NOC (Labour administration)

Yes....interesting that there is a slight weighting towards Labour run councils.....although the boss man at NASUWT was adamant on telly yesterday that that was not the reason that they were against the governments proposals.....whilst the rest of the world work-out how to get kids back into schools we stumble on.....you would think that these countries with far lower death counts of Covid-19 might have sussed out how to do it...and we should take note.

Or is it a confidence thing that maybe the scientists have got their interpretation of the science wrong back in Feb/March and the government has trusted them in error and they do not trust this call for kids to go back to school because of that.....obviously the government want parents back working and some of them can't because children need minding and grandparents cannot do that under the present guidelines....difficult all round.....would Labour have done better....you are kidding me if you think so.

The NASUWT must be one of the most politically extreme bodies in the UK and the harm that the teachers have done to education with their Child Centered Teaching nonsense is nobody's business.

Clearly there are worries for everyone in society about how public heath and the economy should be balanced as we get out of this but teachers do risk blighting the lives of a generation of children, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds of one sort or another. We aren't talking about the military I know, but health workers have done their duty and teachers need to do the same.

Two of my grandchildren are effected at the moment.....one is in her final year at junior school and will be moving on in September....so she will be expected back to school before the summer break.....and my eldest grandson is lower sixth form and will be marked on his course work.....so those that cram before exams to do well have blown it this year with that approach. My other grandson has another year before sixth form and isn't really effected...although he is at a grammer school.

Mixed messages all over the place with Boris being at the centre of most of it. On one hand we can put kids back in schools and on others you cannot go very far or mix with many. Lets get this into some perspective. They are saying that some kids can go back. Ok so which ones will that be then? There is a limit to the numbers and the kids of essential workers will still make up some of the number. About half by my reckoning, So will it be your grandchild plym or will it be the child of the couple down the road? Who decides who? What happens to all of the absolute majority of other kids who can't go back? Another year out or two or what exactly? There is simply no plan. There was no plan on what to do about the pandemic in the first place or care homes or anything else and there is not much of one with regard to them even now. Boris today at PMQs decided to say it was the medics fault they sent people back to care homes without any checks. These are the people who up to now he has been singing about and clapping every Thursday. The age range so far of kids that can return are the very ones that you virtually have no chance of getting to issolate. What joy will there be in letting some kids back when they can't even play with each other let alone interact. My best guess is that this just will not work as it stands now and Boris needs to take charge properly and get a plan going that is properly thought out. The one thing lacking in all of this is that Boris can no longer just put a figure on the side of a bus and tell us all it's true. He has to do better and have grown up plans that work and not only that he has to take responsibility for them. Boris is incapable of doing any of that as all he is is a sound bite that throws a comment at the opposition to poke fun and needs to get a laugh from the baying mob he needs at this back at the time. All you have to do is listen to PMQs right now to know he has no substance, no answers and get mullered by the Labour leader every time they go head to head.

HMS Queen Elizabeth II in the Sound again this afternoon flying Merlin helicopters on and off. Apparently she's doing advanced flying training off the South Coast of Cornwall for several weeks before her first operational deployment.

Recently...Automatic Identity System (AIS)....vessel finder tracking service.....suggested that Queen Elizabeth 2 and Prince of Wales...plus quite a few RFA vessels were in the entrance to the sound.

As far as you can be in such matters, I'm sure about HMS QE II's position and situation: since I've been back down here I follow various serious Navy watchers on Twitter.

Last I heard there was that HM Prince of Wales was in Portsmouth but that was a couple of weeks ago. She could be here doing the regular FOST training I suppose.

I would be surprised if Russia and China had less knowledge than we have of where are fleet is at any given minute.....Russia are regularly testing out our Navy and Air Force....with ships and aircraft coming near to our sea and air borders.....continually testing out our awareness of their position.

Dominic Cummings flouting the lock down rules set by the government that he advises.....his enemies must think that Christmas has come early this year.

He has already said that he won't be resigning.

    1.....Not self isolating......NO

    2.....Travelling 250 miles to Durham.....NO

3.....Taking his child to be looked after by his parents....NO

And we wonder why people people don't obey the rules.

This could be an interesting weekend for Boris to talk out of ?

He doesn't talk his way out of anything he just waffles and waffles. I can't see this is particularly news considering half the MPs have done something during this period. We should always be aware of the rule that there is one for us and one for them.

The Russian Navy has played games like it does now for years and years. When I was in it was ever thus. Same applied to aircraft. They would fly one over we would pick it up and then escort it off the premises. One Sunday afternoon at sea there was a pipe onboard for the ships photographer to report to the bridge. Now that was something unusual so most of the lads went on the upper deck to see what the fuss was about. Her Majesty's War Ship Hecate, armed with nothing more that a bren gun and a few pistols and rifles was in the middle of a Russian Naval convoy. There were at least 6 subs we could see. Then they all submerged and disappeared and the rest of the support ships sped up and buggered off. When I got home my missus gave me a cutting out of the Sun newspaper that said "HMS Hecate shadows Russian Fleet". Our ship did 14 knots down hill with a following wind as a top speed. They left us behind in about 30 minutes and the only thing we saw was a blip on the Radar screen. We did get a lovely picture of a Destroyer that looked more like a Christmas Tree in shape than a ship with all it's gadgets on the upper decks.

To be clear, this info comes from very pro Navy people, well informed insiders, no way they would divulge anything damaging.

PS I presume it was that ship, not the HMS Hecate launched in 1871?
