With a name like Abramovich? His family were Lithuanian Jews, apparently. He took Israeli citizenship in 2018, after his mate Putin used Novichok in the UK. This created visa issues over here, so he's no longer allowed to work in this country or something.
Why is Baddiel such a ****? Chelsea fan, I guess. He can't fail to see how his actions were not the same as those of anyone else that he mentioned. Did any of them use blackface to abuse anyone, let alone a specific person? Disingenuous twat.
Being the weak link in not one but two 90s comedy partnerships has obviously stuck in his craw somewhat
September 19th. A memorium will take place inside Lordship Lane Recreation ground to honour the 40 people killed in nearby Downhills Park while sheltering from bombing during the war. Unfortunately the shelter got a direct hit by German bombs. Apparently the Spurs ground was used as a morgue.
A terrible event. The death of civilians in war seems somehow more tragic, if that is possible. Mrs B's grandma was killed by a V1 rocket in 1944. Her dad, who was just a year old, was blown out of the window and protected from the glass by the blackout curtain. The house was reduced to rubble with only 3 items remaining intact - the piano which was under the stairs and is now in our dining room, a carving knife and her grandma's engagement ring. I've seen photo's of her and she was the spit of Mrs B and we used the ring when we got engaged.
I wonder why the Germans dropped their bombs on a park. Just willy nilly bombing I suppose.I don't think there was anything to go for, unless they were bombing train lines and the Seven Sisters junction.
Sometimes it was simply dumping unused payloads, either because the target was obscured by fog or because a fighter squadron was bearing down on them and dumping the payload was the quickest way to lose weight and get back home quicker Other times they did it purely to be dicks, for example when they bombed Bath even though there was no strategic reason to do so
I did like the story when the German chiefs sent their bombers to bomb the north east without a fighter escort, thinking the defences were down south. They got the crap knocked out of them!!!!
There's nothing more terrifying than the sight of a squadron of shirtless Spitfire pilots bearing down on you...
I did not like the story of British troops sent to Russia towards the end off WW1 during the Bolshovic Revelution. Many were killed and buried somewhere. I don't know if this story was made up or true. That was the only time I read about it.
The British backed the Mensheviks/White Russian Army - the original Russian Revolution (Feb 1917) was not Lenin, Trotsky et al, who took over after the second revolution. After the 1st Revolution, the Mensheviks set up a provisional government, but it collapsed after internal dissension and there followed a civil war and the Bolsheviks took over after the October Revolution. The allied side (including us) got involved to stop Communism but it was soundly defeated by the Red Army under Trotsky's leadership. I am sure British troops did get sent there (mainly to stop the Russians leaving the war against Germany and Austro/Hungary) and so I'm sure they had fatalities.
First World Problems time: a bloke who wrote for a website I've been using for a few years died on Monday night (no, not of Covid, as everyone immediately assumes it...) and his family set up a GoFundMe looking to raise $50,000 to support his daughters Why it veers into FWP territory is the point where you start agonising about what constitutes a "right" donation and, therefore, start wondering what a "wrong" donation is - and given your name tends to get listed with the donation, there's the slight undercurrent of being judged based on your donation, sort of like you do when you donate 20p to the can janglers on the street ...you get the feeling I've been putting way too much thought into this, don't you?
Yep. You're not obligated to do anything, so any contribution you feel comfortable with is fine. Anyway you usually have a staying anonymous option on these things.
Amazing. I wrote that yesterday and today I'm watching a history channel telling me that 8/10,000 American troops were sent to Siberia by President Wilson secretly to help the Whites against the Reds. (No,it wasn't Spurs v Arsenal!!!!) Apparently they were sent to keep the Siberian Railway out of Reds hands. It did say that some 19 American soldiers were killed in a skirmish that sent the Reds running. The troops were in Siberia from 1918-1920 when they were sent home......and the Reds "took over!" I'm still trying to find details about British troops there,if they were.
Yes, as said above, British troops did fight in Russia - certainly around Murmansk. This is why on some war memorials you see the date of WW1 as 1914-19 rather than 18, because for many the war did not end in 1918. It's obviously debatable as to what dates you use to mark a conflict, but certainly the 14-18 and 39-45 dates are not set in stone (oops, pun) in every country.
An update of how lockdown is working in Croydon... You couldn’t make this up! The neighbours of mine on my estate area have been enjoying the sun and a few pints all day and seem to have managed to get in a total fist fight over who was clapping more for our weekly dose of “The Clap”. Two squad cars and three ambulances…
