How come when something like this comes along which no one really knows about, it would you would have been flagged up . A large number of people suddenly losing their sense of smell and taste around the same time doesn't happen every day ffs.

It's been my belief, for some years, that many office/business people don't need to spend that much time at work.

In my experience most business travel is pointless and an ego boost for people who endlessly complain about having to do it.

"Just back from a 5 day meeting in Mauritius, exhausting." <doh>

Exactly, these lockdowns all over the world will have given a lot of businesses a lot to think about. Lots of empty office blocks next to all the empty shops. Not looking good in the near future.

The extra figures today were backdated to December.

They are drip feeding us the info that it’s been around a lot longer, it’s like small print.

The fact remains that the virus alone is not a killer. The management by the government and the hysteria this has caused us the issue.

Less than 3% were ‘young, for and healthy’. That’s a lower mortality rate than seasonal flu I think.

Throw in the collapse of the airline industry, meaning higher fares ...

... and Skype execs will be wondering why they keep flying around the world for meetings <laugh>

The airlines as you say are going to be a different beast altogether after this . I wonder what % of previous capacity of a plane will be used.

Unfortunately we were one of the few countries with a geographical opportunity to actually eliminate the virus, not just get it under control.

Now we'll continue to try and control the spread for the next couple of years, hopefully in ever decreasing outbreaks.

Just watched a really ****ing engaging interview with some dapper old boy saying ‘why don’t we have voluntary isolation, allowing folk to make their own choice and take responsibility’

It’s an interesting view on it, and one I like and agree with.

Wouldn't that mean some people can just do whatever they like and possibly infect those who have no option but to work?

Not at all, the suggestion is that folk are entitled to follow current measures, but you could effectively ‘opt out’.

So if I want to risk a pint in a bar, anyone in that bar would also have made that choice. Staff would have chosen to return etc.

Its a workable option. If you don’t feel safe, you can stay safe without reproach.

And if they all become infected will they be expecting to take hospital beds and receive the same treatment as people who self isolated?

Of course yes, but the evidence is that it wouldn’t overwhelm the system.

ICU beds are running way below normal occupancy. 30% of the deaths are care home related and over 95% with serious underlying.

You could have 5 folk in a bar infected and no harm done. I don’t want to undervalue it or to say it’s not been a serious thing, but the numbers are bewildering.

Ive just seen that it has the lowest mortality rate per capita of any pandemic in the last 130 years. That’s an incredible bit of information, just on BBC news.

You're assuming that those that opt out will behave in a sensible way but experience tells us some people will just ignore social distancing and behave like there is no consequence to their actions. Imagine all the idiots that would be going out pissed up in towns on Friday and Saturday nights the R number would be over 1 after 1 weekend never to drop below 1 again.
    It's a recipe for disaster.

It's the same as what they're doing with the schools , basically thrown the head teachers under the bus saying it's their individual choice. Bollocks.

They are now trying to lower the impact of the ‘r’ rate to suit, bizarrely.

Germany’s climbed back to 1.1 for a few days as lockdown eased and there was no spike.

10 year old Swedish lad just died shortly after going back.

So he's either become infected at school or taken the virus there.

No doubt some people will be claiming he must have had 'underlying issues' like a pre-existing tickly cough.
