The Germans have said that if supporters turn up at the ground then the match can be abandoned and the game awarded to the away side.......

So much different information to process when it comes to children coming back to school especially in our school. Consider...

We've been caring for kids of keyworkers already for the past 7/8 weeks. We were told that if at least one person was available at home to look after said child then we should discourage them from coming to school as they would be safer at home. This combined with the fact parents are being overtly cautious meant we never had more than 6 ever come in on any one day... averaging 3 or 4 at best.

In that time social distancing has pretty much gone out the window. It's impractical and unworkable - and these were Y3 to Y6 kids. But at the same time nobody has exhibited or been diagnosed with the virus, And that in itself has meant on a day to day basis we've not been concerned (rightly or wrongly).

Would I feel the same with 100 odd kids coming back? I'm really not sure. Seeing all the compromises we've made with 4 kids and then multiplying that to 100. Especially when we were being asked to discourage children coming in because they were safer at home.

We were considering doing a rota for children as a gradual return. So some of those R, Y1, Y6 come in Mon, Tues then full school clean Wednesday, then rest of R, Y1, Y6 come in Thurs, Fri. See how that is managed practically and then build up but DfE basically saying no to that.

Then there's the parents. We phoned all the R, Y1 and Y6 parents to gauge how they would feel about the June 1st return. The majority (at least 2/3) said no. Some of those asked what guarantees we could provide <laugh>. We said in addition to current guideline we await local authority guidance also especially regarding SEND child provision.

One thing I would add. I'm getting tired of this strapline that "teachers need to return to work". We have been working. Certainly at our school anyway. That level of thinking is not that different to idiots who think our working day is 8.45am to 3.15pm when schools are open. I don't know a teacher, senior leader or headteacher who doesn't 'want' their school to reopen. But naturally many want that with the confidence that it's safe for them and the children.

Teachers have also been providing lessons and assessment from home throughout the lockdown.

Can you confirm if they each received a £10,000 bonus for working from home like MPs did?

    Errrm no we haven't lol.

I said this a few weeks ago but online activities and resources are limited and only so effective, and as the weeks have gone on we've seen a marked downturn in pupils of primary age bothering to do engage with it.

I've been phoning parents at least 3 times a week and most are asking me what else they can do and we as a school can provide.

So yes our teachers have been working, putting together projects with more practical learning strategies around a single theme covering maths, English, humanities, art and D&T. And that,'s not all, there's the marking and feedback, assessments, the data, the reports, the EHCP applications and reviews for our most vulnerable children, daily phone call to parents, and ongoing training, and that's just off the top of my head.

One thing the search for a vaccine does bring back home to me, is that we still test on monkeys (macaques) in the UK.
