I never had a kappa tracksuit, but it was certainly my time. I was a charver, but that was what was cool then. then it became uncool and the word chav came about...slice it anyway you want, but that's the truth ... I lived that life

    charver is the correct word

Charver originated I assume in the North East, whereas Chav originated miles away in the South East in the 90's. It came from the Town, Chatham, which comes under the Borough of Medway. Why you've associated the two I don't know, because you couldn't actually be a Chav unless you came from that area in it's new found form, although it's origin was actually from Romany. To add to that, Gillingham which is stones throw from Chatham, their supporters would often occur the detriment term of Pikey(s). My mates sometimes used the latter term with me, but it was used more as a jovial endearment, than for offence - although if caught by the wrong ears, could cause you a bit of bother. As for the term Chav it's term did the location of it no favours whatsoever, especially as it used to be a thriving Town Centre but it is now nothing more now than a ghost town.

Isn’t chavvy a word used by pikeys for their kids and it evolved into being used for the modern day chav? Sure I’ve heard that somewhere...

If you're from the north east there's no other word but charver, which has been used around these parts for decades. 'Chav' is a media invention dating back to early 2002.

It's the same with 'craic' and 'crack'. The former is for dickheads who think they're using the 'original' Irish spelling, when the Irish only started using the word in the 1960s. 'Crack' been used in the north east since the time of the Angles, one and a half thousand years ago.

These days it's more evolved into a derogatory term for the working class imo.
