    https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp....lough-scheme-extended-rishi-sunak-coronavirus

That’s the first article that came up when I googled. At £14 billion a month we will be looking at something in the region of £70billion by end of July if furlough levels remain similar. Over £100 billion by end of October at 60% IF the levels of people using the scheme stayed the same, though you’d hope it will gradually go down as the economy opens up further.

Another thing to remember if comparing to the bank bailout is the form of help we are looking at. None of the furlough money will be repaid to the government whereas money did come back on the bank bailout in the form of shares sales and repayments.

It’s not a simple thing to compare tbh and none of this takes into consideration the overall financial packages of either event.

I dont think the amount is my point.

Rich bankers lose people's money, govt takes more of people's money to bail out bank.

Global Pandemic, govt pays 80% of wages, drops to 60%. Forcing mostly minimum wage workers back to jobs.

Its all good though. All good. <laugh>

Youre being nieve if you think the furloughed won't be paying that back.

    Thats hilarious, and quite sweet.

    So no one knows then?

BBC Reporter Simon Jack; is it true there are now hundreds of thousands of people who are unemployed, but don’t know it yet?

    Naive*

****ing hell can no one spell naive?

And they won’t be directly paying it back. It isn’t a loan. Whether there are any indirect costs such as austerity measures or tax hikes (both fairly likely) to help cover the huge cost we shall have to wait and see.

well yeah we will all end up paying for it in the long term but you cannot have a long term situation where 80% pf wages are paid for not working .

We’ll all be paying for this for decades.

I don’t actually have a problem with that btw, I’ve never objected to paying my taxes. But it would be nice if this time around, everyone pays, not just those at the bottom of the heap, the ones least able to afford it. Because that’s exactly what’s been happening since 2008.

But we also want businesses to thrive so that they can employ more people, so don’t expect to see businesses put under crippling pressure by Government/HMRC either.

I’d happily contribute more if the country needs the help, but the minute I see a penny go to a rat faced **** like Branson, or Ian Huntley gets a new PS4, that changes, and I’ll make sure my Mrs never declares anything but the maximum non-taxable earnings.

Branson is exactly the sort of billionaire spiv who should be grabbed by the bollocks and forced to cough up. His companies make huge profits in the UK, they should be made to pay taxes in the UK. The same goes for all the bookmakers who went offshore to Gibralter and Malta; they take bets on British sporting events, they should be paying tax on those bets - if we ever have any more live sport, that is. Ditto Starbucks, Amazon, and anyone else exploiting loopholes to avoid tax in the countries where they make their profits.

No rational chancellor would want to saddle businesses with an unaffordable tax bill, because then they'll just do what you are threatening to do, and avoid paying anything at all. The tax system has to be made easy and fair, so people want to pay it. Gordon Brown was pretty good at doing that.

Only the Tory benches are full of offshore tax dodgers and their mouthpieces, including the wretched Rees Mogg.

So from tomorrow you can have a nanny or cleaner visit, put your house on the market and invite people round to look at your house and play tennis.
