But you do take a side. You take the negative side. For example “but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened” You could quite easily have said 1. No evidence in article therefore nothing has changed. This equals neutral. 2. but that doesn't mean it has happened. This in this context equals positive. So of the three options you invariably take the negative option in contrast to neutral or positive. Someone being negative constantly and consistently drags other people down. Hence why people usually get irritated by negative people.
