Went for a walk today by the old Rover site, and nature hadn’t let a fence stop it from growing where it wanted to.

Nature always wins in the end. Things like that fascinate me. Why did the tree decide to be on one side the the other. Wind blow it to the other side.

Is there any finer site than a wood in springtime?

I have been self-isolating other than the odd trip to the supermarket and to see my Mum. In the end I had enough and when the weather was really nice on Wednesday evening, I took my binoculars and went birdwatching down by the old pumping station at Otterbourne. I was quite staggered by what I managed to see and it was more eventful than I have seen for a long while. This is a list of birds I saw for anyone who is interested. The list follows the sequence of my walk so you can appreciate as I went from my house , through the playing field and along the river:-

    1. Starling
    2. Goldfinch
    3. Jackdaw
    4. Rook
    5. House Sparrow
    6. Wood pigeon
    7. Song thrush
    8. Robin
    9. Blue tit
    10. Chiffchaff
    11. Great Black-backed gull
    12. Grey Wagtail
    13. Willow Warbler (possible)
    14. Kingfisher
    15. Pheasant
    16. Sedge Warbler - some excellent views of one singing on top of a reed about 3 metres away from me. There were loads of them singing.
    17. Blackbird
    18. Great tit
    19. Magpie
    20. Buzzard

I also heard but could not see Chaffinch, Wren and a blackcap. There were a few songs that I did not recognise but I could not see what bird was singing them. I was a bit surprised that I did not see a Whitethroat in the scrub behind the Southern Water Company works as this site is usually reliable.

The insects were a bit think on the ground with the exception of mayfly. I saw a Peacock Butterfly , a Large White and an early Banded Demoiselle.

Not a bad tally for 90 mins.

I don’t know if you noticed Ian, but the title of this thread includes the word “PICTURE”. So, where are they?

Home made scones for afternoon teas as suggested to commemorate our fallen.

Guess which ones are for me... much to the disgusted of my family?
