As I mentioned in an earlier post, an independent statistical analysis by BBC's "More or Less" programme a week or so ago, demonstrated that the Covid 19 related death rate amongst NHS staff was in line with that of the general population.
It's interesting to note that, when I first started work in the NHS, very few of the previous generation of staff actually reached retirement age or lived far beyond it. We all just accepted this as the norm amongst a group that was frequently in contact with a range of dangerous pathogens and who also used reagents and chemicals on a day to day basis that were often carcinogenic. We were issued with protective aprons and latex gloves but it wasn't until greater awareness of Health and Safety issues lead to the introduction of category 2 and 3 cabinets and a properly ventilated working environment that the situation improved.

It is snobbery and absolutely right to be - it's childrens' party food that through advertising and changing lifestyles (for the worse) has become a large part of much of the world's diet and it's contributing to killing western man in the process.

I think we've got mutual friends and met before a game around a decade ago. Someone said almost exactly the same thing to me in a discussion. Were you an oncologist at HRI?

Blah blah blah ventilators. Another should have, could have, would have blown out of the water.

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...s-grapple-with-covid-19s-mysterious-mechanism

“How is this possible?” Gattinoni told Guardian Australia from the intensive care department of the German hospital where he is working as a guest professor. “Bad oxygenation and good lungs tells me this must have something to do with the blood vessels. But these vessels are everywhere. In the brain. In the kidneys. So, in some patients, many organs are affected.”

The problem is, mechanical ventilation in intensive care replaces the strength of the respiratory muscles. If patients are struggling to breathe but their lung structure is OK, this ventilation does little to help and in fact may prove harmful, Gattinoni said, because mechanical ventilation is invasive.

My time in the NHS was spent mostly at Castle Hill Hospital with a move to HRI around 2000 - I wasn't an oncologist but a clinical scientist working mostly on cancer diagnosis. I ended up working as chair of advisory groups for both of the north eastern regional health authorities (Yorkshire and the Humber and the Northern HA) and, after retirement worked for both GSK and Sanofi Pasteur on the introduction of their Human Papilloma Virus anti-cancer vaccines before spending some time as a consultant for the East Midlands Health Authority.

Apologies, my memory on the specifics went a little, but yes that's right, because the pathology section left Castle Hill then. You either worked with, or knew through work, my father in the 1980s/90s.

Have tried McDonalds 3 times, burger tasteless with no texture, dissolves in mouth without chewing.
Chips, revolting taste of horrible oil (trans fats?)
    Caesar salad, bearable
    Never eat breakfast
Consequently, i never eat there. (as I dont wish to live on salads)

That's intriguing - the very best thing about working in the NHS was the fantastic staff. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with many great colleagues and can only remember one who was a bit of a pain - as long as your dad's initials weren't TP he'd fall into the first category. If he was TP then I apologise with the excuse that I wasn't a great judge of character.

I’d have waited and asked for his dad’s initials <laugh>
    But I’m betting it’s his dad<laugh>

I can't imagine TP ever having the remotest interest in City - I think I'm on safe ground.

You are on safe ground. It is JR, histopathologist, although he had no interest in City. I think you and I were briefly introduced, with my father being the connection although not being there, around 2007/8 time. Hope youre well, anyway!

I'm pretty sure I know your dad - smashing bloke with a wicked sense of humour. The first words to me when he started at CHH , be popped his head round my door and said "I think there's been a bit of a **** up here." Great introduction.

Sounds exactly like him. Would have been in 1977, when we moved up.

He's good, usual age-related afflictions. Amuses/horrifies my wife and children by telling them the 'safety and PPE' procedures during post mortems in the 1970s NHS.
