This is now the New Zealand excuse in the right-wing press. Let's get something straight - Auckland is one of the most densely populated cities in the Southern Hemispere. They also made key strategic decisions early on, and don't forget that they are closer to the Chinese epicentre than we are, and they have extensive trade links in the area. But most importantly, they have a PM who is emotionally intelligent, politically astute, and is more interested in serving all the citizens of her country, not just the electoral base that voted her in.

 

Hence why I said it depends on where he wants to draw that Northern line. You certainly know your history, and now you've mentioned it I do remember that aspect of their culture, which if memory serves me correctly also affected language. You might know better than me, but I'm sure it's only in recent centuries the Italian language was the chosen language of dialect - well probably more enforced!

So since I’m in a googling mood today I’ve had a quick look and population density in Auckland would appear to be about 25% of the population density of London. With overall population about 15-20% the size of London. With annual visitors of around 2.7m a year compared to London’s 20m per year they have not far above 10% of the number of people visiting London.

Having visited Auckland, my personal experience is that it doesn’t feel anywhere near as busy as London does.

Then if you look at overall populations and population density the stats are even further skewed towards the UK. With both our population and population density being about 15 times as high.

So in terms of the stats my point was unarguably entirely correct.

I do however agree they have a fantastic PM and they did act very swiftly in a full on manner.

 

All that is true, but I'm sick of right-wing papers and news channels dismissing NZ's strategy as if it's an island on another planet populated by one man and a flock of sheep. And what's more, and shouldn't be dismissed, they do have immigration but still manage to have a far superior health service compared to ours. And before you mention Jenny from Invercargill, I know at least three nurses over the years (and one dentist) who emigrated down there.

So NZ pay about 8.7% GDP towards healthcare whilst the UK pay about 9.7%. So we put a larger proportion into our healthcare service which would suggest money isn’t necessarily the key issue.

Their system is also 77% publicly funded with the other 23% funded by charities, private sector and individuals.

Their ambulance service is mostly run by charities. Though the government contributes money to them.

Some of the key issues in their health service are long waiting times for operations, difficulty providing all services to more remote parts of the country and a high turnover of nurses, which is attributed to nurses often switching between employers due to the public/private combination in the system as well as those who go abroad.

Often smaller countries who are fairly wealthy seem to manage their healthcare systems very well. In larger countries the sizes of the organisations and populations imo seems to contribute inefficiency to the system.

 

I suspect all women are equally hairy, but as Mediterranean women usually have very dark hair, it’s more noticeable.

An ex of mine used to say “I’m a mammal, of course I’m a bit hairy”. She was blonde though, so not so noticeable.

Can’t abide hairy nipples though. Pluck them ffs. When I’m not looking.
