And for seat belts in cars. I only learned my lesson after the second time I was fined in Australia - was asked to step out of the car and had to stand on a hot road without shoes on. That's when I found out that driving barefoot was illegal too.:(

I wore my mask last week when I went shopping, and 15 minutes was quite enough. It became very hot and steamy in there, but I have found the same problem when trying to do some very dusty DIY. I noticed that about 50% were wearing them on my quick trip out to get some bread this morning. I also noticed three people out on bikes, which is banned. I am not quite sure how someone without a car could go and get some food if they live in one of the small hamlets three or four miles from the nearest shop. With the gendarmerie not seen in the rural areas they probably feel that they will not be stopped.

Because exercise is limited to staying within 1 Km of home. I guess that the reasoning is that 1 hour for exercise, and 1 Km from home would be more difficult to enforce if bikes were out and about. I think it shows how a regulation designed for a city, doesn't make much sense in the countryside.

I have seen several comments this morning about a variant of covid19 that is attacking children. It appears that so far the evidence about what is happening is quite sketchy, but with the assumption in a number of countries that schools should open first it could be another problem to add to the existing one. The best commentary I have seen so far is this one.

Sorry Frenchie but this is lunacy - the question of cycling has never been raised in Germany, other than that the Robert Koch Institute have said it is a helpfull weapon against Corona. Primarily because it gets people out of public transport where the risks of infection are too high. Cycling also ensures social distancing automatically, with the risk of inhaling the virus being practically zero. It is also strengthening for the immune system, which is not to be underestimated at times like this. As long as people are not cycling in a group, and are not next to each other at traffic lights then the effects of it are only beneficial at the moment.

I agree in part, but I can see the reasoning behind it which may be peculiar to France. It is quite normal to see cycling clubs getting out of the towns and cities for a quick 90 Km spin before lunch. They stop for some refreshment and have a good gossip, you will see twenty of them at a time gathered together. The whole message has been 1-1-1, which is one person, one hour and one kilometre, all designed to keep people at home. So despite the health benefits, the social gathering is a problem.

    https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/04/26/us/politics/trump-coronavirus-briefings-analyzed.html

I must say this makes me sick...... ( there may be a subscription wall, but you dont need to pay anything....

The Newspaper analysed all of Trumps Coronavisur breifings:

"By far the most recurring utterances from Mr. Trump in the briefings are self-congratulations, roughly 600 of them, which are often predicated on exaggerations and falsehoods. He does credit others (more than 360 times) for their work, but he also blames others (more than 110 times) for inadequacies in the state and federal response.

Mr. Trump’s attempts to display empathy or appeal to national unity (about 160 instances) amount to only a quarter of the number of times he complimented himself or a top member of his team".

I wonder what sort of damages might be awarded if the government was sued on the grounds of negligence? This might be a cheap way out for them.

I'm sure that some enterprising law firm could tell them all to decline the payments - and recommend a class action.

It seems that at £60,000 each, it balances 4 NHS doctors or nurses to be worth the same amount as a second rate hack writing in the Telegraph. The difference of course is that said hack can come back and earn the same amount again the next year.

Credit to the club for their great efforts helping the NHS in their hour of need and for Scott Duxbury coming out and saying they are more important at the moment than starting the season.

(He never said lets cancel it as some claim on Twitter)

Reading through this, it appears that the government has a history of devaluing lives. Those rotten foreigners aren't worth as much as the expendable Brits though...

It is not that often that I feel sorry for a government Minister, but tonight I did start to feel just a small twinge of sympathy for Hancock. He had been stuck out for the daily briefing, and looked almost ill. He stated that the Panorama programme was poor journalism when questioned about the government failure on PPE stocks. He then said that a question was not a question worthy of him to answer. He was pulled up on the figures he had quoted that were obviously wrong regarding the number of deaths in care homes, but waffled without a proper response, and then comes up with this classic.

Q: There is confusion about what the social distancing measures are. Can you clarify them?
Hancock says it is clear; people have to follow the social distancing rules.

He admitted that there was a worry about the virus spreading through care homes in January, but didn't seem to know why nothing had been done to protect them. Of course this rather shoots his boss in the foot who was going round telling everyone that you can shake hands with coronavirus patients without any problems.

For his own good maybe he should resign and take a nice long rest. I am sure the boss will lend him access to his private health spa.
