The working people paid during WW2 - they went along with it for the good of the nation but said there has got to be a better way of doing things when all of this is over. That movement ultimately gave us the NHS and other huge improvements for working people.

Maybe this disruption will also make us re-evaluate our priorities and something good will come out of it? The pictures of cities free of pollution certainly give pause for thought.

Well as someone who has made it to the top of his game and more than handsomely rewarded it would be a nice gesture to help out his team mates ( the kids and juniors) and colleagues in these difficult times. You know the spirit of togetherness, camaraderie, the club, and all that.

To be honest I’ve not kept up with the reason for him being asked to take a cut.
Is his 12.5% going to the kids and the juniors?

if that is the case then why have the club cut money to kids and juniors?

Anyway my question about furloughing was to say if he didn’t accept it surely they could simply furlough him and pay him (with our money) £2500 a month instead?

The Sky news presenter who is on now has turned up wearing a hospital gown, the wrong way round.

Ah they've just gone back to the studio, you've missed it.

No idea on the details, I only read the headline. I just thought when you're earning way more than you need it would be nice to chip in a bit for your work mates who could be struggling.

    He’s got a £350k a week contract, he’s quite obviously not going to accept £576 a week.

Well like any normal worker they could offer him furlough, and if he refused it they could make him redundant.
Not saying that’s a good thing, but that’s how things work in the real world.
Not sure what he’s worth, but at £18m a year it wouldn’t be too long before it would be financially sensible given the amount of games he’s played recently?

    Again...purely a real world comparison

Looks like he's just one more reason I'm glad I don't use twitter.

    Full Fact.org

There is no evidence supporting claims about a government-run network of fake NHS Twitter accounts

Mr O’Connell claims to have identified 128 accounts that form part of this network. However, at the time of writing, we are only aware of one account...There are elements of the account that suggest it may have been intended as a parody of left-wing activists.

At this stage we have been unable to identify any of the other 127 accounts that Mr O’Connell claims to have found.

Mr O’Connell claims that he has identified the individuals behind the alleged network of false accounts. He suggests that the group responsible may be a “marketing agency” that was “set up a few months ago. with one client (guess who) and three staff (all ex DHSC)”. He has also said that this firm is based in South West London. We have not been able to find a marketing firm that matches these criteria,

For the record, this is not the first time we have fact checked a claim that Mr O’Connell has made. His was the first account we were able to find that shared a false quote that went viral during the 2019 election campaign. The quote (in a now-deleted tweet, still available on the Internet Archive) was claimed to be from the leaked US-UK trade documents, and supposedly said that the US reserved the right to “withdraw all trade” if the UK did not agree to discussions about “the sale of all assets within and partnered with the National Health Service”.

No such quote appeared in the leaked text. When asked by a Twitter user where the quote appeared, Mr O’Connell gave a page reference that did not exist in any of the documents.

That was the government's estimate of deaths in care homes due to coronavirus so you're right its likely to be much higher.

From reading a bit about this tonight, a lot of the articles say he does far more for charities than anyone would think, and they get a lot of his salary. In addition they put up the argument that the money he would give up, it would go to Arsenal who are looking to save £25m a month, or take the full wage and pay tax which ultimately, some of that tax goes to the NHS.
I'm not defending him, £350k a week is an obscene amount, but some of needs putting in context and what he does with it before slating him.

Yeah I’m not slagging him off, and I nearly posted a link to some of his charitable work earlier.
I was more just wondering, out loud, why footballers are being treated differently to others.
Arsenal are wanting to pay less out, because they have less coming in, but as you say that literally only helps whoever owns shares in Arsenal...and hurts public services who will get less income.
I’m pretty sure that Arsenal would be able to borrow a bit to tide them over?!
If the players were being encouraged to chip in to help fund a factory to make surgical gowns, then I’d get it.
Footballers are an easy target for people to get outraged about, but what good does Özil taking a reduced salary for anyone apart from some people who are already rich? It’s not like they have such a cash flow issue that they’re going to go out of business is it? Plenty of companies are in that position and you could understand them all rallying round as employees to help out, but Arsenal? **** em
(Oh and of anyone thinks he should get paid less so the club doesn’t have to lay off cooks and junior players that’s even worse. Kroenke needs to just suck it up and borrow a bit against the nearly £2Bn it’s supposedly ‘worth’, keeping paying people then maybe cut their cloth accordingly when they next decide who to pay ridiculous amounts to)
