I think part the problem is people latch on to something, generally beefed up by the media, with everyone screaming we need this and we need it now....my thoughts are ok, you've got them, now what the fook you going to do with them, I'm not trained, your not trained to administer it, and nurses are only human and need to eat, piss and sleep like every other human being.

I'm not saying there ever was a time, but there was a time when the vast majority would've been under government social care and so the question would be far less relevant.

It's more than this, what do we want in future, a continued disjointed society where it's each care home for themselves or one where perhaps it's expected that government will have a structure in place to meet basic essential needs regardless of whether your care home is state run.

well where i lived when i had dealings with this the number of private homes far exceeded the state ones but in terms of beds probably 50/50 .
Not sure it is every care home for itself as i think they are dealt with by the local resilience groups but the priority for PPE up to now has been NHS staff ,and that is not down to out sourcing , just a judgement on priorities .

Fair Comment LL . I would just add that IMHO All govmts of recent times , yes that includes Labour , have been guilty of all of this .

It's just such a crying shame that it has taken something as horrific as COVID-19 to make a lot wake up and realise the fact .

There are plenty of stories of individual care homes struggling to obtain PPE through private sources, even if they club together locally then they still do not have the clout that the government procurement system has.

obviously but as i said before the decision was made that they were a lower priority than NHS staff and in house or outsourced what evidence do you have that the priority decision making would be any different .?
This basically comes down to the pure and simple fact that the country does not have enough PPE for its needs .

    Sadly, just this.

It makes me angry to think that we sent 650,000 pieces of PPE to China in February and failed to start preparing adequately sooner. There is another story around this to do with Matt Hancocks company but I'll hold back until I hear more.

As well as drafting in final year students and recently retired staff they’ve also redeployed loads of people from services that are either not currently operating or are operating at a far reduced capacity.

Which means overall they’ve got the staff required but there is still a shortage of specialisation for some of the ICU stuff and so a lot of crash course training is going on to try to help cover this shortfall.

One of the bigger issues at the moment isn’t staff levels but levels of intensive care meds available as despite some of the stockpiling that happened in preparation for Brexit we are still looking at shortages. It isn’t a simple thing to solve either as we can’t just buy a load more of the same meds to cover demand so they’re looking at alternate meds and treatments that can be used and the pros and cons of each in preparation for having to switch partially away from the stuff we use currently.

i considered not posting this due to the present feeling towards the NHS ( i have a more jaundiced view of it than most ) but I can honestly say i would be very worried being cared for by some of them considering my experiences .

Yeah that’s fair enough I think. It can make a big difference to outcomes depending on whether you get lucky or not with who treats you in my experience as well.

Do you think that’s reasonable? Not sure I would.

My mum has carers come to her home. They weren’t using PPE, but apparently they have been issued with masks and aprons.

**** knows if they do any good tbh.
